Hey, congrats on the purchase! $400 is pretty cheap! Sounds like you scored!

1969-71's are tough years to tell SS from a non SS. Since SS became a trim level instead of a separate model as it was from 65-68, the VIN number doesn't help...

Here are a couple things that can help to ID one in 71...
    * SS car's ALL recieved the ROUND Guage dashboard.
....... Of course Non SS's could have had them too- however Non SS's only recieved them if they were special ordered with the exteded guage package. an SS could have had the Round Guages with Idiot lights. If you have an Idiot light Round Guage dash- and it hasn't been swapped in- then you probably have a legit SS. If it has the Rectangular Sweep style dashboard- then it is NOT an SS.

1972 Dashboards have a rectangular opening over on the far right side for the seat belt warning light. A lof of 72 dashboards have been swapped in to earlier cars- if it has the warning light, its not original.

Also- 1970 guages have Green Lettering. 1971 & 72 have White lettering. So if yours has the green lettering it probably is not original.

Honestly, unless you have documentation there really is no way to tell 100% sure that it is one... But considering you picked yours up for $400, i wouldn't really sweat it... Just enjoy it for what it is!
