Pro, this was copied off the website link below. It should answer the question....

"This very dangerous crowd pleasing spectacle (the match racing fire burnout) was popular in the late 60's and early 70's but was eventually banned as it proved too dangerous. Coordination between the driver and crew was critical. As the engine was running, a crew member would pour a flammable liquid under the rear tires and then ignite the brew. The driver would hesitate slightly and then burnout (literally) creating volumes of ear splitting noise, fire and smoke. The drag racing fans went nuts!"

Note that it says early 70's but I seem to remember them in like 77 and maybe even as late as 78. Maybe the local track I was at during that time allowed it and didn't put a ban on them at the same time the NHRA did?
