Great stuff Don, thats what its all about !!! Look forward to seeing more
Thanks guys. Yesterday was the most fun I have had in a long time and I am just happy I made it out alive and with no car damage.
I've been going over my timeslips and trying to analyze the reaction times and 60 foot times. The car was spinning too much to launch well, but here are some of the results. What does some of this mean:
Reaction time......... .397 ............60 ft..............2.16
RT........................ .047.............60 ft.............2.161
RT........................ .321............ 60 ft.............2.049
RT........................ .063 ............60 ft............1.769 (best run, 7.90 et/92 mph
Don
You had two good lights, two lights that you slept through!!!! Too much spin to get a decent 60' time....
I tried leaving when the last yellow lit up, but sometimes the car wouldn't move because of the tires. I considered trying second gear starts but the last thing I wanted to do was blow the transmisson.
A member on another forum posted a video from his car, and it was cool to see my roadster from this perspective. I've never seen it going down the road.

Don
Kind of looked like you were still hazing the tires when you went around him. Way kool vid
Looks like you opened up a can of woop A$$ on him Don ,good run
You smoked the other guy off the line..... Great job!
What a blast!
7.9
Hey, does that equate to a 13 or 14 Second Quarter time?
Thats pretty quick!
Very cool, Don.
Yeah, that wasn't really a fair matchup, his car was full size and heavy, but there was no real racing at this event, just a bunch of guys who normally wouldn't get to run taking a stab at it. The one car that I got smoked by was a Cuda running slicks and in race trim. I looked at time slip and I ran a slow 8.596 to his 8.134. He launched better than me and I could never catch him but I think I got scared when I saw him pulling away and didn't stay in first long enough to make second gear effective. My Speed was way down that run, only going 83.46 to his 91.98.
The reason I quit after 6 runs was that I didn't want to push my luck and hurt anything, I would still like to have this car to drive around in. :D I floated the valves on one run and it didn't feel as strong then next run. I think my 6 pounds of fuel pressure is ok on the street but felt I was running out of gas at the end of the strip. When I would slow down at the turn off road my rpms would drop from 1200 at idle to about 600, then slowly recover (as the fuel pressure maybe came back)
I think I am going to look at that 355 Camaro motor I have laying in the shop, plus I have a stick of 2 x 3 box tubing, and some misc parts.....................................:D
Don
You smoked the guy next to you!
Do we sence a new project???
Scott, sorry, I missed the question you posted. I went on line to a 1/8 to 1/4 mile conversion calculator and it says 7.90 would be about a 12.32 in the quarter. I know the motor was good enough for better times, it was those dumb Firestone old timey slicks that weren't. :(
What surprised me when I looked at the conversion table is that if I could have gotten the car down to a 7.65 that would have put me in the 11.s at 11.93. And if I could have knocked a second off of my 7.90 time and turned a flat 7 second run, that would relate to a 10.92.
But I had a lot of fun and came home safe with no real problems. There were so many things that could have gone wrong, like I have no blowproof bellhousing and I kept worrying about the flywheel coming through the floor, or getting sideways and hitting the wall or worse. The Man upstairs let me have a nice day with a lot of nice memories, and that was enough for me.:)
As for another project..........maybe, but this one will be my Son Don's. He and I did a little horsetrading recently and I traded him the 460 engine and Jackson Racing C6 I have had sitting for a 93 Mustang fastback he had sitting. He is going to build the 460 to put in his 79 Capri drag car. He got bitten by the bug to go racing while at the track Sunday, so I think I will help him spend his money. :)
Don
what you need is about an 8 inch spacer under your carbs to give you more phlem area-----I seem to remember maybe they call them 6:71????
I've got a polished 8:71 for the 392 I'm planning to use in a 33 roadster!!!!!
My plans have evolved to doing the 8:71 392 hemi AND a flathead(got one from 52 pickup) and every now and then rotate them with each other into/out of ONE chassis---that would save on parking space, license, insurance, paint, upholstrey-----run one a month or so, switch to the other---
But donate a blower to someone??????? I might send you a camshaft---or even some olds heads if this guy doesn't pick up the ones I did a while ago---
Yeah Don,I was going to say for you to get a 1,800lb Alter that wouldn't take much motor to get you going and not continue with you street car.But you answered that question already.
Nice thing about you guys in the sun shine St is you can race almost anytime of the yr you want.Wears on part more, but to me it would seem the investment return being able to race more would be greater.
You get into a lower numbers would require a roll bar/cage on your car.
I know what you mean about the roll bar or cage. 92 mph was fast enough for me without one, sitting with my head as the highest point in the car. On about the second run when I hit second the car went a little to the left and I was in the right lane. I had to lift until it straightened out, but that wall looked too close for comfort. Don was shooting a video on that run and he got so concerned when he saw the car get out of shape that he forgot to keep shooting. :D
It sure if fun and addictive though.
Don
When I made my first pass the other day I had the timing set where I run it on the street.......it runs good there and runs cool, so I put a mark on the distributor and block and keep it there. When I made my second pass I advanced the distributor a bit and it really liked it there. It was much stronger out of the hole and when I hit second it went to the left pretty good and smoked the tires almost all the way through second. I was turning my best times of the day. But as the day went on the car started slowing down both in mph and et. I figured I had hurt something, so I quit racing while I was ahead........I had enough fun anyway by that point.
Today I decided to go for a little ride in it to run some errands and while I was at it I decided to put the distributor back on the mark where it runs best on the street. What I found was that during the day my distributor had retarded itself quite a bit and was retarded twice as much as I had advanced it ! In my haste at the track I must have not tightened up the clamp enough and the counter rotating distributor turned itself backwards. :(
I set the timing back to the mark and it drove just like it always did. I kept telling Don something was wrong those last few runs because my rpms would drop from 1200 to 600 or 800 after a run, and I was thinking fuel pressure. But I am relieved to see nothing mechanically was my culprit. :)
Don
Good news Don. I started reading this and thought oh no, but good news that it was nothing permanent or bad!
For not being able to hook up, a 12 sec. run is very respectable!
I am with you about not wanting to go faster without some more protection...
More than anything, I am a little PO'd at myself for letting that distributor loose. I could have beaten that Cuda.:LOL:
I think I have been bitten by the drag racing bug. I spent last night cleaning the block and pistons from the Camaro ex racer I bought a couple of years ago. Don't know what I am going to put it in, but all machine work is done on the block it just needs fresh cam bearings, the head mounting surfaces decked a little, and the cylinders honed to make it usuable. The World Product heads look good, but I'll get them freshened up. It came with an AirGap intake, Holley 750 DP, electric water pump, B&M TH350, some MSD ignition stuff, and roller rockers, so it won't cost a fortune to make a nice little bracket motor out of it.
I would like to put together an old timey Bantam altered, but I do have the 93 Mustang Don just gave me in trade for the 460 stuff. When I told Don I was thinking of putting the Chevy in the Mustang he said "No way, I'll buy you a Ford motor before I see that happen !"
Don
Chevys in a Ford seem natural... Been happening since the beginning of rodding... Tell Don to get over it! LOL
Hehe, I would put another Ford engine in it, but I am fresh out of them. :o
Don
Yep you got the bug,, Racing fever no cure you have to go racing
Yep Don.From the cheap seats........well really not if you only knew.;):LOL:
Going to cure the national debt between you and Dave.:toocool::3dSMILE:
I keep trying to get people to put Fords in Chevys, got even the playing field!
Don,I consider you as a on line friend.Because of that I wouldn't be a very good friend if I urged you(please, please,I mean no offense)to get into a car that you where over your head.I have said that I know I have some 4.0 lights left in me and some 9.90 passes too.BUT I also know that me as a main driver my back given my age would not put up with letting go of a tranny brake and I would be hurting the rest of the week.My RT's are not as good as they once where either,so driving the car as I should way ahead of where I am isn't as good either.I have know guys that made big moves in ET's faster and ended up getting themselves in trouble.Joe Laspata raced RED's for yrs and made a move to a Spitzer alter. From the very first pass he was having issues because that car hit so hard on the leave. He was banging his head on the cage and added foam to it with little relief. He was having a hard time keeping up with the car driving too.So I agree bud, build something you all can have fun with and the hell with what anyone else says.If it is a super light Alter, make it so it is a economy move to save on not much of a engine and then lower the costs of the build.
A friend of mine here in town runs an auto repair shop I should say he dose all the repairs. I know this because when he gets behind he calls me. He has a Opel with a BBC in it running Alcohol, runs in the 8s all day long. If he isn't driving hes helping others get ready. NOW get this He's 76 years old. A neater guy you could not find, Sharp as a tac.
Funny you should mention about hurting after racing your car. I think I gave myself a mild case of whiplash from that heavy helmet and slamming gears. My neck has been a little sore all week after Sunday. Old age sure has a way of letting you know you can't fool around the way you used to and get away with it. :o If I do build a little drag car I don't care about the et's too much, just so it is consistant. It will definitely have an automatic, it was too hard for me to concentrate on keeping the car straight and shifting. I don't think I glanced at the tach one time all day, I just shifted by instinct.:o
Charlie, hats off to your 76 year old buddy. I can't see myself doing that in 10 more years.
Don
A follow up Don is I have seen a number of light wt cars with not much of a 383 going as fast as 10.90.
Oh good, I sense a sbf under the Christmas tree !!:D:D
