unisteer jeep tie rod end

I have a 32 Ford High Boy with sbc and a unisteer rack. I really like the rack except for the common complaint about the turning radius. I have checked a lot of sites and several people have added a jeep tie rod end which attaches the side steering arm to the tie rod and then to tie rod arm eliminating the double hole on the tie rod arm.. they say it really helps. My question is how much does it improve the turning radius, does it make low speed i.e. , parking harder or the same. Any info would be appreciated. cheers happy holidays Bill

I'm watching this too Bill, since I have the unisteer in my 32. I'm not too worried about the turning radius though. Growing up in NJ, I can do a K-turn just as quick..LOL

If both of you, Pat and XLT , want a solution. I'm sending you a PM . As I have figured out a way to get better turning radius outta Unisteer with out coin the jeep route.

What about others that might be interested in improving their steering performance, or simply learning about alternatives? One of the things I like about CHR is learning from the problems that one guy has, and then how they solve the problem safely.

I don't have a need for the details, but when XLT mentioned the Jeep tie rod end it piqued my curiosity so I'd been watching the thread to see if anyone jumped in with suggestions. Maybe after XLT or Pat figure out their solution they will post how they chose to skin this cat. A lot more questions than answers out on the different forums when this comes up.

I'd be interested in how this turned out. I also just picked up a 32 3 window for Mama and it has a very large turning radius.

I got involved in another project and this sort of fell by the way side. I did order the part from Speedway and hope to install it soon. I did speak with Unisteer who would not endorse it but said it should work in theory. I will be getting the 32 out of storage shortly and will take a close look at the steering before i start, I want to make sure it will not hit the headlights or frame before I start cutting things up. thanks for the interest I will update it soon cheers Bill

So you're going with the Jeep part?

Big Jim I am planning to go with the Jeep part with in a couple of weeks. I was able to gain some new information after doing another search. I found a post by enjenjo on Hot Rod Forum from a couple of years ago about this modification. I sent him an e mail and he was nice enough to get back to me. He has used the Jeep part on several cars, no downside and on average in increased the turning radius about 15 degrees. I will up date this after I do it to my car with my results. enjenjo is also a long time member on this forum and I appreciated his advice. Bill

Well I finally got enough time to try the jeep tie rod with the unisteer. Got tied up with the corvette and had to put an engine in the 32. The jeep tie rod does increase the steering a lot, well worth the effort, however! I could not use it on my car, I found that as the tie rod moved in the arc it twisted down at the jeep (passenger) side hitting the lower chrome four link, ok bend the steering arm up? couldn't do that on my car as then the tie rod would hit the harmonic balancer. I kept looking for ways to solve this issue and I couldn't do it without making more modifications than I wanted to. Its worth doing, as long as your engine is back far enough or high enough to clear the tie rod in its arc or your steering arm is higher than mine, . The only way to know is to mock it up, hope this helps.
