If you wait until tomorrow, I can give you my opinion on how much room you need. I will measure mine and tell you what my dimension is. On my car the idler pulley is the culprit, I'm assuming that is the real problem for you also.

ok, this is a rollercoaster im on......i measured every possible part in the way or near the 1.5 inch move......
1 cross member will hit shifter on 4 spd
2 trans will have to be shaven down on some of the casting
3 cut the fire wall
4 steering box will have to be in a wacked angle
5 altinator will come real close to steering box
6 lakester pipes will be only 1/2 from body on pass side
shifter will be that much closer to seat .
if i move the radiator 1.25 in forward i can eliminate all this issues ....
sorry if im driving you guys crazy but think what im goin thru....

You asked for honest opinions (I thought that's what we've been doing all along)...............mounting the rad forward makes it look like somebody screwed up mounting the front axle. And you can try explaining it away to everyone who sees it, but they'll walk away thinking you did something wrong.
If it was easy everybody would be doin' it.:D
get rid of the blower! I have one and now I wish I never bothered with it. I cant run a original hood is what I dont like about it the most.
dont get me wrong i know their is honesty , imjust saying 1 in may not be so bad. id say moving cross member is totally out of question . but i will see what tommarow night brings , new experience happens every day ....
We know where you are coming from, and understand how upsetting these little setbacks can be. We have all wrestled with them. The comment I made earlier about it only being metal with the ability to be moved around to get the desired end result is really what it boils down to.
Maybe it would be advantageous to have a good rod fabricating shop in your area move that front crossmember and related parts forward. There is no shame in using people who do this kind of work on a daily basis. Perhaps they can suggest another alternative, like putting a couple of inches into the front frame rails, moving everything forward that amount. Steel can be cut and welded and you never know they were in there, if done right.
I think it was Bob who suggested that '32's lend themselves to a longer wheelbase anyway, and he is right. It would make that substantial engine look like it belonged in there.

I think Don is right, you might want to consider a little stretch. My truck has a 3' stretched and I liked it so much I stretched my Dearborn 5". I got tired of fighting the no room problem. Just a thought.

A couple of thoughts.
How is the clearance for the top of the front carb to your future hood? It looks tight in the photos, or maybe your planning a scoop or something else?
Take a long straight edge or masking tape and place it on top of the radiator shell and all the way back on the cowl until it touches the base of the windshield. The result will be the side profile you will have after you hood is installed. I realize you more concerned right now about the radiator/fan/firewall fit but take a look at the side profile before you get too far along.
If your like me, its the little things that drive you crazy and its better to bite the bullet now than be sorry later. On my car I ended up with a two inch extended three piece Hagen hood and sides to get the proper consistant smooth drop starting at the cowl. Just an opinion.
John- good thought, that was real important to me I didn't want to cut my hood. I lowered my motor until it all fit.
Godspeed32 - Is this a concern of yours?
If you don't want to move the front cross member or cut the firewall, then why not move the radiator and fan to underneath the car or into the trunk. Others have done it and it seems to work well if set up properly. Don't forget to louver the trunk lid.:D
That way you can keep your grill where it is, and use a standard hood (assuming that the blower/carb combo won't require a hood modification. Still keeps the traditional 32 roadster look, even though a bit more radical.

I can guarantee you, in either scenario I would have a neon sign pointing right at me saying "HEY, CHECK THIS OUT !!!!!!!!!!!!" :D :D
