Well, I got the car in November, took me the better part of 2 months to get a title and tags, by then it was January, and snowing... I took it for one illegal spin on Xmas eve, and one more this week when it finally thawed out. Now its pouring rain, and more snow expected tonight. Not everyone has ideal rod weather all the time...probably nuts for me to even buy a highboy roadster living where i live, but thats my favorite body style, so i figured what the heck. Believe me, when its fit to drive it, it will be driven. if i had no intentions of that i wouldn't be working so hard to make it road worthy.

    It snows where you live?

    What is that like?

    haha...

It just seems like you have had that car longer than that. What was the issue with your title/tag?

In PA, you gotta jump through hoops to get a fenderless/bumperless car registered, as they just were accepted as legal this past year. I had an out of state title and the car was not registered as a street rod in that state, in fact, it was listed as a 4 cylinder 1932 roadster... i had to get forms filled out my a local inspection station, take various photos showing it had wipers, mirrors, signals, proper exhaust, legal windshield height, etc. etc, provide reciepts for work done to the car, fill out a booklet full of various forms and papers, then wait 6 weeks for them to reject me once, then resend the info with the corrections, have it all notorized, pay a title fee and sales tax for the car and all its parts, and wait another 3 weeks for that to come back. In addition to all this, I also had to getit insured, which was another full set of photos and forms, send copies of all this to the state to prove i had insurance on the car, and generally go through a whole saga of song and dance. As of right now the car technically STILL is not fully legal, as I need to take it BACK to the inspection mechanic to have the inspection sticker put on it, which cannot be done until AFTER the registration is accepted and completed. A total PITA, and its getting worse, as now you cannot just go to any state inspection station, it must be an "approved" station certified to inspect what the state considers "reconstructed" vehicles. But thats a whole other thread in itself... right now my problem is still lousy brakes. I'm hoping to have a buddy come over and help me bleed the brakes and adjust the rear shoes this weekend, but once again, the weather may play a factor in that... they're calling for 6-8" of fresh snow by saturday. You gotta be a diehard to own a highboy roadster in PA.

Hey joey qick question for ya, i didnt read it anywhere, single or double output master cyl?
I could see a lot of travel on a single setup with disks in the front end,
    just a thought.
Ive got drums front and rear on mine and manual brakes, the pedal; is very responsive with not too much travel but you have to press quite hard top get it to stop hard from high speeds 100 mph plus.

Its a dual setup... theres a link in an earlier thread to the same setup as sold through Speedway Motors... at least it looks very similar to what my car has.

Joey, why do you think I left Pittsburgh?? PA was the most restrictive State I have ever lived in for motor vehicle laws. When I left there in '82 you couldn't legally do ANYTHING to a car,........raise it, lower it, NOTHING. I'm amazed they have slacked off at all.

    Yeah, that and the snow.

Don, there's a reason the law was ever changed to allow fenderless/bumperless cars to be registered here...the story as I've heard it told goes like this: A couple years ago a PA resident (Pittsburgh area actually) won the NSRA giveway car at (i think) Louisville KY. It was the green and white scalloped 32 3W you may recall from their ads. When he paid the taxes and brought the car home to find out he couldn't legally even register it in his home state, he went ballistic, called up his local representatives, filed petitions, etc. and maybe even had some high ranking friends within the state DMV that helped get the legistation passed... and supposedly it was because of this car being won by this guy that an amendment to the Street Rod registration rules was made. It was the very first car without fenders to be legally titled in PA, and the guy still owns it and drives it. I saw the car at the World of Wheels show in downtown Pittsburgh back in February.

That may be the background for the changes in the PennDot regs, but I know a couple of guys who were on a committee made up of streetrodders, PennDot people and some SEMA people who held many meetings on the subject of what could be legal in Pa. Out of that came new allowances for fenderless cars, hoodless cars and bumperless cars.

When I got my streetrod registered back in 2001 I was lucky in that I didn't have to use the new 21 page reconstructed vehicle forms -- mine was only 3 pages. It still took 8 weeks to get a new title and vin plate, because PennDot had rejected the Ohio title due to a problem with the s/n (vin). Mine was inspected by a local inspection station, not a special inspection station. At the time of my inspection, the car had no front bumper, dark tinted windows (even a tinted windshield), no s/n plate on the car and PennDot still passed it.

Back in 1999, PennDot was considering outlawing chopped cars. Fortunately they gave up on that idea or mine would still be illegal.

By the way I can sympathize with you about all of the snow, as where I live they are getting about 8 inches today. The good thing is that I am currently in Dade City Florida and it is 80 today and I will be going to a car show tomorrow. Couldn't do that where you are.
