Hiboy quality time

Time to tear down the roadster again... I will be spending Most if Sunday in the garage, tearing down HIboy's nose again, for I have sprung another pin hole in my 1932 radiator.

Radiator expert, who fixed the last pin hole will fix for free, since it is his patch that did not hold. We are going to reinforce radiator in that area. And NO, I do not want to change my radiator and get a new one. I am a sucker for old stuff.

While I am at it, I will tear floor pans and grind wood here and there to kill Mr. Squeak (remember him?)... He has been squeaking his head off for 2 months straight now and it is time to silence him (hopefully forever)...

Hell, I might even measure them rear shocks to order me new ones...

And thanks to my new bangs, I will be able to SEE what I am doing :LOL:

have your radiator cleaned/ recored, it will save you trouble in the long run.

It already has a new core... It's the seam that is giving us trouble... It is weak in that area and tends to blow a hole easy... I now have a 7 lbs cap but I still blew a pin hole in it again (long story...I'll spare you the details) :rolleyes:

We are gong to put a bunch more metal in the weak area to reinforce it...

Faith, when I had my '36 back in the '60's I was running the stock radiator with a small 4 bladed fan and no shroud. The engine was a fairly hot (for the day) 265 with 2 4's. I never ran a pressure cap and the radiator never gave me a problem. I drove the car from Dayton, Ohio to Camp Pendleton and all over So. Cal. Of course the traffic wasn't as bad then as it is now. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think you might try a regular cap and a catch can for the over flow.

I think a 7# cap is about as light as they get....................

Don't know what the big deal is about getting a new radiator, sure would solve a lot of problems. I've never had anything but grief getting a radiator recored, and they always seem to let go at the worst time and of course out in the middle of nowhere......

Oh yeah? where? I'll ask my radiator expert today. I have been driving Hiboy around for 2 weeks with the cap half way off (no pressure, but it gets messy, even with the overflow, fluid seems to find it's way into my engine compartment and made a big mess all over my valve covers, carbs, etc....

The problem in my case is a dominoe effect. My wiring is funky (my next big investment in march will be to redo the entire thing, it's already scheduled and mapped out). Once in a while I blow my radiator fan fuse. If I do't catch it fast enough the temps go up to 195 and then the radiator goes FEEEEESH (hole) and then back to square one (tear down car, take radiator out, take to shop etc etc )... Once wiring is redone, fan shoudl work always and problem should be gone or at least less probable. Reinforcing the weak area of radiator may do the rest.

if I really keep having thsi problem even after I do both THEN I will consider a newer radiator but this owul dnot be my favorite way to go, since I am heading towards "rat rod" more than anything at this point. besides, I have a personal emotional attachment to my old radiator :) - It's seen a lot (depression, war world II, swing, the 60's, the 70's, madonna, the new milleneum and NOW it is even putting up with ME :D ) So it deserve to be given a chance to LIVE on... And see 2010??

I got a 4# cap from the local auto parts store, they also sell a preassureless, but these are ugly, octagonal, and have a red and white " DO NOT OPEN HOT " label. BUT, I think a '32 would originally have a preassureless cap SO, you could get a new '32 lookalike cap, from a place like Macs auto parts. but if they do not, www.chevsofthe40s.com, sells new reproduction '37-'52 chevy ( will fit your radiator ) 4 PSI and preassureless rad caps, for about $10

You know if your that attached to your stock orignal radiator you can replace it and hang it on your bedroom wall:eek: :eek: Hot rods are a high maintanance item. If there is somthing you can fix so it won't come back and bite you THAT would be the thing to do.

gotta agree. parts like radiators wear out, and 75 years of wear and tear, will start to show thru, it arleady has.

IMHO ... you need another water pump setup ... electric fans belong on Hondas and other Jap cars ... not Hot Rod Hiboy 32 Fords.

Mine cools a 430 HP Chevrolet ... and the ZIPS has a alternator mount built in ... no worries about pukeing a engine and basically maintenance free ...
