At 140 GPH (2.3 GPM) gasoline through a 3/8 line I compute a pressure drop of 0.02 psi for an 8 foot run. This is what I called "point squat" above. Meaning the 14 psi pump does not even know this restriction is there.
You should try to put the pump as close to and below the tank pick-up as you can. My pump is below the tank pick-up but further away than I would like. Holley recommended the twin filtered suction lines prior to the pump. These just have sintered brass cartridges for minimal restriction. I think I am going to add a large cartridge filter between the pump and carb as well.
