where are the block numbers on my 283
Back of the block, right above the bell housing. a wire brush, degreaser and a scraper will prove useful to find and read them. If not visible due to tight spaces ( if in vehicle ), get a peice of clay or even playdough might work, press it on the numbers, take a mirror and read the imprint. With a truck, tight spaces shoulden't be a problem.
its out and down to the block when i get these numbers off how do i find out what year it was made and stuff????

Check here to decipher the engine code.
thanks alot i found out that my engine was manufactured from 61-64 and the heads on it were made from 63-65 and they are 60cc chamber.
so this tells me that my engine was manufaturd in either 63-64.
oh and are 60cc chamber heads any good for racing or drag racing?????
ok one says it was made from 61-62 the other says it was made 61-64 any ideal witch it was block number (3789935)
mor tec say's the head's were made from 63-64 head number (3795896)
thanks
Shoulden't matter truckguy, I don't think the blocks changed from '61-'64, you could get pretty good compression from 60cc chambers so, yes they could be good with the right pistions.
ok i have been thinking abought forged pistons for it.
what should i get done to these heads??
thanks again
Hey Truck Guy,
Have them cut for 1.94 intake and 1.60 exhaust valves. Use some Z-28 valve springs if your going to stay around 280 adv. duration on cam. Stay with a dual plane intake and your 283 will do pretty good. Something to think about..... those heads and flat top pistons will require premium + gas! You may want to drop down to a 73cc head to make things more gas friendly ;)
Just my 2 cents,
Alan
ok thanks for the information
but i was thinking abought a tri carb intake so if iwere to go with the tri carb and the pistons would i need to get another set of heads for it to increase horse power is there a better set of heads that i could get for it oh i dont care abought what type of gas i'm not going to drive it much i am thinking abougght building it to drag race so does anyone know what would be a good setup ?????
thank's
You might go with the old reliable double hump 68cc heads, If you want to stay with a cast iron head. The come std. with 1.94 intake valves, rework the exhaust to 1.60 smooth out the bowls and port match the intake. If it were me I would run a Performer RPM intake........stay away from the tri-power set up, more looks and nostalgia than performance.
Good Luck with your project:3dSMILE:
Alan
ok i will see if i can hind me a set of thoes heads and get that done to them i guess i will go with the performer rpm intake since everyone tells me too so wich one of these intakes would give me the most horses and what carb should i run on it???
thank's
Hey Truck guy,
If your still using a 283 you wont need anything bigger than a 600 cfm carb even if you go with the camel back heads. I would go with the performer air gap intake with a performer 1405 edelbrock carb. That intake gave me 6 hp and 4 lbs of torque over the reg performer intake, the cost is about the same. Good luck with your build up!!
ok thanks i will see if i can get that stuff .
oh and another Question what does a blower do for a engine????
