few questions on starting the 283 that has been setting for 20 or so years. Already drained the gas, carb overhaul, new points, condenser, plugs, wires, new fuel filter, oil, oil filter.
1) correct pont gap? .19??
2) firing order 18436572 ?
3) from front are cylinders on left 2468 and right 1357?
4) correct wire placement on the cap? which connection should be the wire number one? I think the rotor rotates counter clockwise.
4) distributor is in the rear, where should the vacumn be pointing when looking at it from the front?
5) even with carb starter fluid I still cant get the engine to run..it tries to turn over but it just won't catch. any thoughts?
even with the point gap off and the timing shouldn't it still crank over and atleast run rough?

some thoughts were to remove the top of the carb, fill the bowel with fresh gas, trie a new pointless distributor, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated Thanks,,Paul
1) Point gap is close
2) Correct 18436572 Clockwise
3) Correct. Dirver's side is 1357, passenger 2468
First 4) Get your engine to top dead center. Then look where the rotor is pointing. That's #1. Make SURE you have cylinder #1 at TDC, not #6. You can tell by holding your finger over the #1 spark plug hole as you bring the engine up to the timing mark.
Other 4) Should be on your left, with the spud pointing at about 45 degrees to the front. However this is not critical, as long as you get the First 4 correct.

Thoughts:

- If your timing is WAY OFF, it won't run at all. See First 4 above and make sure of timing.

- Pull off a spark plug wire and see if you're getting spark. If you're not even getting a bump with starter fluid, I'm guessing a spark problem.

Oh, btw, DONT fill the bowel with gas. Danged uncomfortable, that . . .
