i ilke the rope idea.
I used air and a compresion tester with the needle valve removed. You can buy the tool to remove hte valves on the car - i forget where I got mine, sears or snap on.com. Not expensive. I have done a couple of fords this way.

Be careful NOT to drop the split retainers into the engine (or the gravel driveway in one case - hard to find!)
