    283 questions...

I just got a 283 for 500 from a friend who replaced it with a 406...i am going to put a holley 600 and edelbrock performer rpm on it to replace the 2 barrel setup...this is all going into a 79 280zx...i was wondering if anyone out there could tell me what to do with the engine down the road to make it a little faster...also, it has power pak heads....any idea what it would be at in hp with the parts i have stated? the rebuild he has on it is 500 miles old as well...

I am not really looking for fast, i am looking for high revs and old quality, i only have the 283, in searches for a 350 i have turned up empty handed around here, so i took what i could find, he put the 406 in there because he wanted his nova to be big, i just want my z to move...i want to get a compression ratio of at least 10:1, so any help for getting me there would be great, nothing too big is planned besides that...it has power pak heads, does anyone know where i could find info on them?? the corvette had fuelie heads and a 4 bbl carb, so my setup shouldn't be too far off....at least in looks...i just want a good engine that's old and runs nice...nothing extremely fast, and not a torque monster...just small and moving....any suggestions on what to do with the 283 to keep it sane without dumping a lot of money on it would be nice...thanks for your advice tech, but any suggestion other than go bigger would be appreciated...

i did read your post, and i told you i wanted everything you said i would get from the 283....you did tell me to keep the 2 barrel, but i was wondering what else i could...i will check the heads when i get a chance...thanks for the site...sorry if it sounded like i was being dumb or a smartass...i do want to know what i could do money wise to put just a small bit more life into the lil engine...and i will be calling and ordering a cam that is suggested by the company when the time comes, so i won't ask what kind of cam you think i should get....
