have the machine shop check the bore obviosly, if it needs to be bore(it most likely well) have it bored to what it needs. no point in boring more than necessary. For years people seem to think that boring is a big power maker, or they say its bored .030 while telling about it. its really not much of a power maker. If the cylinders are worn, & it needs to be bored, than have it bored. John

    try2bfast,

In order to make recommendations it is important that we know more about the car this motor will go in and and how you plan to use it. How much does the car weigh? Is it automatic or manual? 3 spd, 4 spd, Overdrive or 5 speed? Is it a street machine, race car or street strip? How big a tire can you get under it? There will be other considerations to such as what gear ratio to use and if it is automatic what stall for the converter.

What works well for a 2800 pound car would be a real dog in 4000 pound car. If you are going to drive it on the street a motor that makes all it's power above 4500 RPM is not going to work well.

Be realistic and honest in your answers so folks can make good suggestions.

Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!

ok thank you for your replies but my plans are to buy the block and build it up and put it in a camaro probably a late 80's my plans for the car is a street car that i can take to the track and still run good times i am going to buy a new trany manuel of course im not sure if i want a five speed or a four speed but i want a manuel and it will be going in a camaro and as for the tires as big as i can go without getting pulled over for looking like a strictly drag looking car. i would tell you times i would like to run but im not sure that will help any. mid to low 12's if possible. thank you for all your help i really appreciate it.

hey bud i love a good stroker id prabably start with the block like stepside mentioned i wouldnt go to far with it 30 or 40 over would be good enough you would want to bore it again oneday find you a good 400 crank and matching shotpeened rods a set of forged 11.5:1 pistons hypo pistons are good too just depends on the rpm youre looking to get a solid cam kit like crane 's saterday night specials.......for the heads -personally i like the sportsman2 merlin 202 fastburn 64cc heads about 800.00 for an assembled pair a team g ram track intake manifold and a 6al msd ignition system should start you out good for around about $4000.00 ./.........but if you really want to feel some pavement pounding power go big block after all the only subsitute for cubic inches is cubic feet......but you can find all the parts for your smallblock in summit and paw good luck bud.........

Thats what im talkin about get yer hands dirty every1 seems to wanna go crate nowadays-don't get me wrong now i think they got some awesome motors warrantied and fuel effecient. but it still doesnt match the feeling you get after you top the oil off and fire it up for the break in..........if you do the work your self it wont cost you as near as much as you might think i put the best of evry thing in my big block massive horses for about $5000. you just have to decide what you want it to do and find all the parts to do it just keep in mind the small things like forged pistons or hypo pistons forged are great they just dont expand like hypos do so youll have to bore the block to fit the piston look into a good billet steel cam (aka roller cam) it will let you turn higher rpms but invest in a rev kit to save your valve train. its the little stuff that costs the most.........good luck
