    Thumbs up

Amen..there scooter.. ...Glad to hear from someone who enjoys the old trustworthy 283.....Though I am an old inline.(GM of course) enthusiast zealot buff..the old small block is a fave...Ya don't have to have FOUR BOLT MAINS or 454CID to have fun with a project...I have a stock 283 in a 64 Chevelle as a daily driver that never misses a beat...A guy needs to build what he wants...by how much he can afford...by how much time he has.....A good running...good looking...good sounding...fun to have...anything can be a project of sorts even if it doesn't fit the criteria...Japcrappers excluded of course...I make a living repairing everyones crap...Stupid..over rated ...time consuming.. high priced ...hard to repair..offshore tin junk.. along with boats with about the same bull crap...so when an ole 283 or an inline GM of any year comes by it is enjoyable to go to work and make a buck or two...or to bulid for myself what I want.....what the hell........
The cylinders have to be inline.!!!

what amazes me is, I dont think anyone ever said a 283 isnt any good, yet the defence is up like everyone is bashing it. I think the worst has been said about it is that dollar per HP there are mabye better choices. Ive nothing against 283s, there great engines, & yes, of course they rev quick. some of these 12K RPM claims seem a bit rediculous unless theres big bucks in the bottom end. One thing a 283 may rev quicker & higher than say a 350, but than they need to to make the same power, its pretty easy to make a low compression 350 that makes 300 HP & never see 6000 RPMs, while a 283 with the same compression well need to go to 6500 RPMs. just my opinion, & my experiance, dont take offence. I would keep the 283, it's a Duntov motor for one, and you can get big block hp & torque out of it( stock BB ) if you wanted. They are VERY good motors & if you don't want it I'll buy it.

As for the Holley's, FIRECHICKEN, I can be up in University Place in 'bout45 min.'s if you want to get rid of some Holley Carbs, unless ya want to run for them??

Hmmm. A built 283 with big valve heads would make an awesome turbo motor. It'd have torque out the kazoo and rev to the sky.

About how big can you go with heads on a 283? I love my 283 now but i want more rpms out of it without having to worry about the unleaded gas. Bigger block just isn't option for me (Mother's rules). I'm very new most of this and am just trying to learn as much as i can. Matt

Gee - I hate PMs unless they are sent my way!!

And a lively thread, no doubt.

I have heard more than a few mechanics rave about 283s with a 327 crank.

But - I thought only the 327 block 283s (identified by dished lower cylinders to receive the 327 crank) could be safely bored to .125, allowing 2.02 valves.

Something about hitting a water jacket if you bore other 283 blacks to 4 inches.
