Sounds like (apples and oranges here) the original ignition module on my 2001 Indian motorcycle. They would suffer from heat soak, and cut out until they cooled off.
Anyway it sounds like something similar. Good luck..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.
