SBC stalls under load

I recently put some summit timing gears into my 305, and put a new water pump on while I was in there. I got everything put back together, and went to start it up. Perfect, idles great in park, will get up to high rpm without any issues. I go to take it out, and it seems to die at higher rpm when in drive or reverse. If you’ve got your foot down and let off suddenly, it will just stall out. As a test I sat in my driveway in drive and tapped the accelerator pretty hard, and when I let off it just died. Any ideas what could be going on?

When you say timing gears do you mean a timing set, i.e., new sprockets and chain or did you put in a gear drive?

It sounds like a timing issue. Are you set at 8 degrees before TDC at idle with vacuum advance disconnected?

My bad, yes, it is a gear drive set. And the timing tab is long gone, didn’t think to put one back on when I was doing it, but I didn’t appear to have any timing issues prior to this, as the engine ran fine before the timing chain jumped

Find the correct timing tab for the engine and set the timing correctly!

I never did find the reason my 302 stalled . finally just replaced it . I pulled it and checked the timing marks and reinstalled it. same thing . something to do with factory retard I've heard. it was an 84 crown vic with tbi .

Do you have a Knock Sensor that is hooked up?

I have HEARD it may be the cause of strange timing

But I agree with Dave, you should have the correct timing
tab.
