Mechanical fuel pum on 350 SBC

Just got my 350 back together and when I cranked it up
gas squirted out of the air hole on the fuel pump. Is this
a sign of a bad diaphragm, or could something else be causing
    this problem?

Sounds like a bad diaphragm, check your oil to make sure no fuel went into the oil.

+1. I've witnessed gas in the oil from bad pumps twice on SBC's. Can't say how many times I saw it on air cooled VW's, but that's another story.
