Looking to replace my Summit 750cfm, with a carb that won't flood out my engine, and needs little attention. I have the Edelbrock Performer manifold, Comp Thumper Cam, and Brodix 64cc aluminum heads. The motor is just a 350 crate motor.
Edelbrock 600cfm Performer carb, OR Holley 600cfm Street Performance carb? Would like to hear some feedback from you gents, that have either one of these on your rod. Thanks
Got my Holley off of e-bay for 25$ put a kit in it, been the best carb. i have ever owned.
Either one right out of the box should work fine. IMHO, though, the Holley is a better choice as I believe they are easier to tune, but to use the Holley it will require a spacer/adapter since the Performer is a spread bore manifold and if the Holley is bolted directly to the manifold the fuel signal will be messed up.
i would get the 600 s holley . looks good and performs well. very tunable .
you will find we like them both .. i have a holley on my stang and an edelbrock on my pinto .. the edelbrock presents less problems such as leaks and stuff but may require a pressure regulator as they cant tollerate high fuel pressures .. make sure to get the electric choke model ..
Good advice Hoss. There must be a zillion Eddy's on the street so it just becomes a matter of personal preference.
Almost like the difference between Bud and Coors, personal preference, but in a blind taste test 75% of the die hards get it wrong when guessing which is which! Like my edelbrock, never had to set a thing right out of the box.
The old adage is, " A Holley will win on race day, but an Edelbrock will get you home from the track." Some truth to that IMO. Holleys pump out more HP as the Edelbrocks are a little detuned out of the box and made for smooth street operation. I personally feel Holleys are a little more trouble prone, I know they don't like a speck of dirt in the fuel, whereas an Edelbrock doesn't seem so finicky in that respect.
I like Edelbrocks because you bolt em on and forget them, and the fuel milage is excellent.

how do you know, what thickness phenolic spacer to use under your carb? I've seen 1/2", 1", and 2" spacers in the summit book.
the factory never used more than a 1/4 inch spacer so a 1/2 inch one should be more than enuff ..
x 2 Don, also nice thing about the Edelbrock is you just remove the top to get at stuff, I've tuned a fair few Edelbrocks over the years and they are very tunable and you will get better gas mileage out of a Edelbrock if setup right.
That's a 'Which is better, apples or oranges' question.
For a street driven vehicle, you just cannot, IMO beat that Edelbrock. As roadster32 said, pop the lid off of it, make your changes and then go from there. Holley's - great carb, still fairly easy to tune, but changes require that you dump a cup or so gas every time you go inside. And if it has the exterior feed tube to the back bowl (4160 types), the 'O' rings always need changing when you disassemble for changes or risk a fire(personal experience:eek:)
The electric choke version is identical to the manual choke version except for the jetting - it's a step or two leaner and $40-$50 more money
the orings were done away with years ago. they have a rubber sleeve on the tube now. i have never run an out of the box carb. they are at least 2 sizes fat on the tune .
I think Holley is the better but I use both. Ed. one the wifes 57 and Holley on my 73 BBC. I belive that Holley makes them (selles them) on the fat side so people that don't know better wont run them lean...
Friend bought a 290hp crate SBC and just added an Edlebrock out of the box, no issues once set up.
One of the reasons I've set so many records and won so many races is I never ran an Edelbrock carb----
And when someone comes around for me to straighten out and tune there Holley/s , I look up in the book to see what jets and power valves it came with and go there for a starting point (out of the box?) and fine tune jetting, powervalves, accelerator pumps, cams, squirters as conditions warrant--
We have this conversation on a regular basis. I concur with most of what has been already said. GM used a 750CFM Quadrajet on everything from a 305 to a 400 cubic inch engine and they performed admirably. Often maligned, the “Q-Jet” is also a good choice and they sound really great when those large secondaries open up. The only reason I mention the Q-Jet is because they were 750CFM on the SBC and GM did not consider that to be “over carbureted”.
I don’t know which Summit 750 you have, but it may be a tuning issue rather than a size issue. Brodix make a great product and your 64cc heads could have anywhere from 180 to 225cc runners. You also didn’t say which Thumper cam you have – that will also have an effect on carburetor performance.
I like both Holley and Edelbrock carbs but as others have mentioned, I find the Edelbrock to be fat out of the box and inevitably lean them back a size or two and often change metering rods on stock (or near stock) engines.
In my opinion, the Edelbrock performer is a very “user friendly” carb and driveway tuning is possible without removing the carb from the engine. As with any carb, gaskets are important as is not dropping “little” parts down the throat!

yeah but i think you'd have to admit that althought the Holley is a much better carb on the track that for the average Joe, the Edelbrock is much more easily maintained than the Holley which is probably why i see more edelbrocks installed on SBC's than anything, but performance id give the edge to Holley but they do require routine tuning for the street.Quote:

Updated post - I swaped out my carb, for a 600 cfm Edelbrock 1406 for my small block chevy. Starts right up when cold, doesn't flood, and runs great. Finally - - I made a good choice !
i don't know jerry, i've never owned a Holley i didn't have to adust with it being more adustable tuning than the edelbrocks you can do on the holley due to engine conditions, gas, winter or summer driving. all im saying is even if you have em fine tuned for a daily theres still adjustments you gotta make year round to keep em runnin at 100%. i know from runnin different setups on the street that each holley has it's finer points of adjustments that need to be made and i know im not the only one who has had the same experience with Holley's. i'll still run both though

Not a perfect world, each has it's + and - Eddy decent carb all around take less messing with, but I think one on one performance the Holly wins. The nascar fans I am sure have noticed the absence of eddy on the top of those hotrods.
The Holly not so keen on the bowls, those need constant attention cause they always seem to ooze gas around the screws, not a big deal just sloppy looking, and not a real reason to not run them.
Then there is the Demon, that in their paper work they tell the owner to clean out the ports around the carb top regularly. Then my favorite the Predator animal carb. No matter what brand you run you need to fine tune them to get the most out of them.
As most know sooner or later they come to the conclusion, that bolts right on is a myth or industry inside joke.
BTW it takes a real man to run a manual choke ..... LOL!
like jerry once i set up an engine i don't touch it again . the holley is an extremely adjustable carb and once set it will stay . keep in mind that a rich carb will always start easy and fool you. it starts easy because the engine is full of gas fumes. if i set it up you will need to give it a couple of shots.

I have never had or even seen a Holley bowl screw leaking gas---if it does, you haven't got the seal on it--and i might add, that these seals are easily dropped or more likely case some come off with the screw and some stick to the bowl and then you mix them up and put some back with no seal and some with 2 seals.
a lot of issues I see with customer holleys are related to base plates---throttle plates cranked way open to get something to idle that has a screwd up ignition advance urve or overly rich because the cam is too big, vacume leaks, exhaust leaks, too high pressure with float bowls running over---
Another area is an air cleaner that sets too close to the top of choke tower restricting air flow to primarys--

I think the holley is a better race carb then a every day driver, myself.
My holley's always seemed to be a little cold blooded on a cool day.
I am running a 600 edelbrock on the wifes 72 Vette and it could be
sitting for 3 months and I go out and turn the key and it starts right
up, And thats on a cool day as well. I used to run AFB Carter's on
my big block Dodges back in the day and thats why I decided to try
the Edelbrock and have had good luck with both now.
I guess the old Rodchester would be in the same class.

I have recently used them both on my 327. The holley was a 650 dp and the edelbrock was a 600 performer series. I got the holley brand new. It reved waaayyy faster and even changed the sound of my exhaust a little (for the better) I literally got 8 miles to the gallon with it. It was running a little rich so i jetted it down til the plug looked nice and still it got horrible fuel economy. I drive mine daily so I bought a used edelbrock 600 for 25 bucks. It was pulled off of a mud truck for the first time in a few years and was covered in mud. I cleaned it up and bolted it on, set the idle and mixture screws and She fired right up. The truck ran much smoother at idle. Sounded like a throttle body truck. It reved a little smoother but not as fast. I doesnt quite make the peak power of the holley but has nice throttle response and smooth acceleration. I havnt even jetted it yet and im getting between 10 and 10mpg turning 33" mud tires on a 67 swb 4x4. If I was builing a race car it would be the holley. For a driver or for a non carburetor expert like me, You cant go wrong with the low price no maintainance very reliable edelbrock. Good luck in your quest friend.
