    327 advice

Im a newbie and doing my first engine rebuild, picked up a 65 327/275hp motor. Looking to keep it simple and clean things up and reassemble mostly stock. One upgrade I want is a cam, looking for a lil more hp, but want to keep stock 461 heads. Any advice? If you need more info let me know, thanks

    Welcome to CHR!

The 461 is a great head from the 60’s. The distinct “Camel Humps” were sought after and for you to find a complete engine is a real find! Do you know what vehicle the engine came out of? You say it’s a 1965 275 horse but to the best of my knowledge, the 327 dressed in 461 heads in the Camaro, Nova, Chevelle, Impala, Biscayne was 250 with hydraulic lifters or 300 horse with solid lifters (1.94/1.50 valves) in 1965 with the Corvette being 350 horse with the 2.02/160 valves and a solid lifter cam.

1966 was the only year for 275 horses, with the Corvette being the same 350 horse exception.

Can you tell us a bit about what the engine will be used for? Body style? Stick or automatic? Rear end ratio, tire size and what you’ll be using the car for, i.e., daily driver or occasional cruiser?

The biggest mistake people make is picking a cam without thinking through the answers to the above questions. Makes a huge difference. Choosing a cam for a lumpy idle rarely makes good sense and more often than not results in poor performance and embarrassment from Civics and Toyotas with the loud exhaust and a shot of nitrous!

Let us know what your final goal is and we can certainly help you out!

    Regards,
    Glenn

It's the other way around the 327 300 H.P on up used the 461 and 462 Double Hump Fuelly Heads . The 327-350 H.P L-79's Got the 2.02"in and 1.60"ex Valves and the Hoter #151 Camshaft and Aluminum High Rise intake . The 327-250-275 H.P Engines from the 60's that I have had apart had 74cc chamber heads with 1.72'in and 1.50" ex valves and had under 9.1 C/R

We started with a little 300 HP 327 in our 1948 Thames street rod ........ it also uses the 461 heads .......... cleaned up the bottom end but basically left everything down there stock ........ added a Comp 270H cam and kit, Edelbrock manifold and 600 cfm Edelbrock carb and an MSD distributor and Blaster coil, and Hedman block hugger headers round out the package ......... came out with a super little package for a light weight hot rod .......... great sound and performance .......... coupled to the engine is a TurboHydro 350 with a B&M 2400 stall converter and a 9" Ford rear with 3.50:1 gears .......... the "injector" shroud was built by Alan Shadwick in New Zealand

Numbers come up as a full size gm 275hp, no vin code to it so we were thinking a replacement from the factory? Will be used for(no laughing) a fiero, will be stick and a semi daily drived, basically when its nice out I will be driving it, im thinking a small bump to a mild bump in performance will be more than enough in my lil car thanx for the input so far

That COMP 270H That old Coyote is running is a Fine Camshaft and is large Enough for Street Performance . But I am thinking the COMP XE262H would be better and hard to beat for what you want it for .

Nice thing about this forum is I always am learning something new. Those are some good looking heads, Tango! - here's a link to a discussion on 461-462 heads with a ton of great pictures and some additional information.

461 and 462 heads. What is differerent? - Corvette Forum

I especially like the part about how we seem to "remember" all kinds of good stuff about these fuelie heads that sounded good at the time but may not of been "quite so".. I know I get things confused a bit from time-to-time and I appreciate the knowledge base on this site (as well as a few others) to help put me back on track!

As to your "stock" manifold - could you send a picture? Might be a real keeper but a visual would help!

    Regards All,
    Glenn
