With all this talk about 305s lately,and their usefullness as a hotrod motor it got me thinkin. The 1st gen z-28s ran 302s. In a book that I have it says that they were rated at 280hp but were a lot closer to 400 and could beat a 396ss by almost a full second in the quater. The 302 consisted of a 327 block and a longthrow 283 crank and camel hump corvette heads. So I'm thinkin a 350 block and a 305 crank would just be a bigger version. Ideally you have the 350 displacement and a smaller lighter crank would equal a high revin, fuel effecient (less rotating mass) hot rod motor? I am no motor guru and I honestly don't have a clue if this combo would be any good but it makes sense to me. So if any of you have tried this or just maybe know what your talkin about lets hear your two cents. And all you guys who like to sound like you know what your talking about can answer too (like you weren't going to anyway)

I have a highscool friend that had a 69 Z-28 and I think it had a 302. (early 70's if yer askin') At the time I had a panel truck (weighed about 3.000.) with a .030 over 327. It ran purdy' good... nuff' to lift the front end. We raced, I beat him, he got some razzin' over that. Cuz' the car had a rep. as being fast. Didn't beat em' by much tho. Raced a 396 Chevelle with the panel too. Guy at work was shootin' off how no small block could beat a big block. Got beat the first run cuz' it wuz winter and the tranny lube was cold and I missed a shift.(Had a verticle gate on a 4 spd.) Second run I smoked him goodOriginally posted by superdirk17

Talked to him last summer and he sez' he's still got that "Z" stashed away in a shed up on blocks. Next time I get out to Iowa, I gotta see that thang. Brings back some good memories.Last edited by pro70z28; 03-04-2004 at 06:59 PM.

Well that kinda burst my bubble. I am glad to hear from someone who knows what their talking about. (unlike me) So I guess the only difference in the 305 and 350 is the bore and heads? In that case I will stick to the 350. Thanks for the info tech. While I am at it. Has anyone ever destroked a motor? Maybe using a 283 crank on a 350? If so what all did take to make it work? Different size bearings, rods ? If this is a stupid question don't answer it. I haven't had any experince swaping displacent or the lack there of so I am really just curious.

Thanks guys! It's been a long road. Fun doing finishing work for sure. Getting the dash ready for paint and some interior trim. Have to do some finish work on the aluminum headliner before...
