There are crate motors and then there are crate motors. The term is being thrown around a lot as of late and can mean anything from a base Goodwrench replacement engine to one that is either new or remanufactured to pump out hp. Everybody has a "crate engine" in their cars these days.

If you look on the back of the block on top of the bellhousing you will find numbers. I would have referred you to Mortec.com to find out what you have, but their website seems to be gone for now. But this one should give you the same info:

I understand your enthusiasm in wanting to build the very baddest engine you can, but you have to remember that "speed costs money.........how fast do YOU want to run?" Also, the more hp you build into a motor the faster weak links start showing up. You need to not only pump up the engine but the entire rest of the car to handle that hp.
