283 or 327
Hi there, hope someone can help me out.I have a small block in my 63 belair and am trying to identify the size of it.Someone suggested the engine number but have no idea on the decoding of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks,Darren.

The best identifier will be a stamping into the block deck at the passenger front side, right at the intersection of where the head meets the block.

If memory serves me...what you will be looking for is the "letters" stamped there.

Hey Richard I think AU means Australia which means look on the drivers side.

Yep Richard,Penrith is in Australia so it is the drivers side he needs to look at.. I also believed that the numbers down the rear drivers side ( american) below the left hand head gave one more information eg engine size etc., but I have been known to be wrong once before. Now I am going to go out into the garage and write down some numbers so that I can check to see what has taken up space between the rails of my car..

nothing more disappointing than checking the casting on a craigalist "350" and finding out its a 305. especially if your slow like me and don't check till after you buy it

Don't recognise that number at all.
I have a chev rebuild book that has one page dedicated to engine numbers between 1959 to 75
