305 Monte.

Have a 305 87' Monte Carlo SS. Bottomline is that i want more power out of it and since im basically really new to cars how should I go about doing it? I've asked my dad if we could put a big block 396 in it and he said we could but then we have to change exhaust and a 100 different things because of the size difference. Whats my best and easiest way to get the hp up without getting into something that i'm obviously not ready to get into.

I'm not trying to get 400 hp out of this car since I want to do this just as a strong driving car that I can take out on weekends and such and get another muscle car to really let loose some power.

easy fix drop in a 350 exhaust and wireing will just about hook right back up. You can add lots of H/P to a 350.

Will the car have to go through emissions?

Newb sorry, emissions as in like an inspection of the car to make sure the environment isnt being effected? Sorry again.

Ok, I didnt know the 350 would basically just drop in without doing a few more things, nice to know.

Will it get a yearly state inspection to ensure it passes testing. If you don't have inspections then the cats and emissions can go away and you can do what you want with the car, as long as you don't get pulled over and checked by the cops.

I did a little work on my 305 and it does well enuff for a cruser/driver.

A comp xe 262 cam ,some rhodes lifters ,roller rockers,a double roller timing chain,edelbrock intake and carb and some ramshorn exaust.
You could skip the rhodes lifters and roller rockers to make it even cheaper.

It should be about 275 to 300 hp ...plenty for what I am doing with it.


It did not cost too much ,untill I added the shiney look good stuff.:LOL:

Here is a 343 hp build...a little to extreme for my tastes,if i had ti put up with a engine like this ,it might as well be a 700 hp big block.

Thats about where I want to be at around 300 hp, not to much not to little and it will still get up and go. I will probably drop a higher gear in it so it'll take off a little faster because I like 0-60, 0-100 speeds to be faster than I do my top end speeds.

Your engine sounds good too dude. Thats another engine rather than a 305 right? I saw on peoples comments that they were talking about a 307 so I just assumed it was one. If it is a 305 did it sound as good before you made it look good because from what ive read looks are just looks and have nothing to do with performance. (I do love those looks though, clean and man I hope I have the money one day to take the time and make one right like that)

Yeah ,it`s a 1985 305 ,bored .030 over and I am shure it would have ran and sounded just the same without the shiney stuff, next will not have the shiney stuff.......too much to polish and keep clean with no shelter for it.

Yea my dad said that we will probably just rip the 305 out and put a 350. We will probably bore and stroke it too but i'm sure i'll drive it around a little while before we start to do all that fun stuff.
