Few SBC questions!!!

I'm new to the whole hot rod scene. I have always been a turbo 4 banger kinda guy, but i'm sick of rebuilding my car every 6 minutes! So I bought an S-10. It now has a
010 4 bolt main 350 bored .040 over.
882 Casting heads (small valve) 76cc (I think)
Double Valve springs, Aluminum roller rockers. 1.5s
crane 113932 cam. its a 266/272 duration
Stock HEI distributor
Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake
Edelbrock 750 Carb
Heddman Headers
No exhaust yet
2800-3200 stall
350 turbo trans
factory 3:73 gears

Got it all together, and it's slow as Christmas. It's about as fast as a Vortec V6 5 speed. I'm dissappointed! What can I do to make it 400+ HP without spending an arm and a leg. I have a set of 64cc 1.96 valve Double Hump heads I can throw on it. Thanks for any input!

them 882's are 1.94 1.5 you camel humps are probably the same valve size. what is your compression ratio? whats the lift on the cam?

That would be a 357ci . If it a Flat Top Piston Build 9.25.1 C/R with them 882 Heads . This is your Camshaft http://cranecams.com/index.php?show=...32&lvl=2&prt=5 It is on the Small side . You Could have went Bigger on the Cam with that 3.73 in the Back . Sure them Double Hump Heads would Help . they would Rase your C/R and they Flow better then the #882 un-Ported Smog Heads . If you do Change the Heads Swap the Camshaft too . Go with the Comp Cams XE268H hyd Flat Tappet Camshaft . Your Intake and Carb are Good . That HEI needs a Curve kit asap it would even help with your build as is . There are other ways to turn this Engine Up . But with the Parts you already Have This will be the Best way . I do think with the D/H Heads you will need to run 91 Octane Fuel .

thanks for the good info! I believe the valves are 1.96 in the Double Hump, and the 882s are 1.8X something! They are smaller for sure. When I change the heads, and get a bigger cam, can I run a bigger cam that the one you suggested? I want a rough idle! And I don't mind running 93 octane. Its not a daily driver at all. just a mall cruiser/race truck. I really want as much power as possible..

The best thing to do is to dump those heads. Economically, the best head choice would be a set of Vortecs, but that would also mean you would have to sell your intake and get the Vortec compatible intake. They would raise your compression and they breathe better than the old double hump heads. I agree with Tango about the choice of cam, but another good choice would be the Lunati Voodoo #60103. Either of these two cams would work well with your stall converter and your rear gears. If you have the scratch, get a set of AFR 180 aluminum heads and then hold on for dear life!

I dont mind running 91 octane, because I already run 93 in it. I already have the double humps, so I will probably run them for right now. And the cams you guys listed don't come with lifters, so what types of lifters will I need when doing the cam swap. is it safe to reuse the ones that i already have? My existing cam and lifters have less than 30 miles on them. How much hp do you think those would bring me up to?

As for re-using them 30 Mile Lifters I would . But it really is Best to always run New on New so the Camshaft will break in right . The Camshafts Listed are Hyd Flat Tappet Grinds . You would want Good Hi-Rev Hyd Lifters . You can Pull your Camshaft out and mark the lifters in/ex per Cylinder and sell it on this Forum . Now I am thinking Your Double Hump Heads are 1.94"in/1.50"ex Heads and you do need screw in studs and Better Valve springs up to 500" Lift installed . And if you run the EX268H Camshaft I would say with out Looking at a P.C Engine Dyno you will have a Real H.P of 380-385 at around 5500-5600 RPM's . If your Double Hump Heads need all the work as above . Look into buying different Heads . If you do not want to do the intake/valvecovers and rocker arm change out . Look at these Heads they Flow just a bit Less on the Intake Side and a bit more on the Exhaust then the #906 GM Votecs that need screw instuds Stronger Springs and the Valve seal Bosses to be Cut Down to work on this Build . http://www.competitionproducts.com/p...?number=4266KA Price for Pair . Awesome! So what about a good roller cam? I know They are a lot more in price, but thats what i'd like to eventually go to anyways. I eventually am going to build a nice stroker bottom end, so I really don't want to re buy everything later on. Id like to be in the 500+ range when I drop in the new short block!

S/R Torquer heads are a good buy. I ran them on my previous street rod that had a 350 with a B&M 142 supercharger. I had them pocket ported before bolting them on. They are capable of supporting 400 hp. The only down side is that they have the older combustion chamber design, but they are available in either 67cc or 76cc chambers so you can choose your compression ratio based on the pistons you have. You could almost have a set for what is costs to completely rebuild a set of old heads.

A lot of forums do this... it's a way to control spam from being posted over and over again on the boards... this has been a very effective tool as I've not seen spam postings at any of the forums I visit...

Usually this restriction is lifted after 10 to 20 posts depending on Webmaster...

I'm a firm believer in matched components. Get the Edelbrock Performer RPM cam to go with your intake and carb. Edelbrock put lots of $$$ into research to make those components work well together. On the head side, it's hard to find a better bargain on a performance head than the GM Vortecs. They outperform just about every stock small block head that Chevy has ever produced.
