    rocker question

    hey,
Maybe (pretty sure) you guys can help me. We put a sbc 350 in my datsun 240z, its a stock goodwrench crate motor 1992 made in mexico with the stock heads, edelbrock intake, 600 edelbrock and shorties.

I wanted a little extra power so we put the summit 1104 cam 224 intake and exhaust @.050 w/ 465 lift intake and exhaust. upgraded the springs to summit 490 max lift and new umbrellas.

Question: Everything seems fine, have not really jumped on it yet though...
Are the stock 1.5 rockers ok with this cam or sould i buy long slot 1.5 rockers

    Thanks, bob

First of all I think that your screwing up by using springs that are only .03 taller than your cam lift. Your just asking for disaster if you float the valves or you get coil bind.

For just a few more dollars you should get springs more like max lift of .560 or so. They will run cooler and last longer. I always ran higher rated springs with my H-flat cams. Normally 135# closed. that way your worry free of valve float if your running a 7000 rpm red line.

With small H-flat cams like yours long slots are not needed

budlight thanks for the info... I am sorry to hear that I may not have enough spring. I called the summit tech line and they said the .490 springs are a good match for the .465 lift cam.

anyone else have ifo on the spring or rocker question? now im not going to drive my z till i get this sorted out. Thanks, bob

Your springs are plenty, dont worry about them, I wouldnt worry about the rockers either but if you wanna buy new ones why dont you get some roller rockers, comp cams makes great ones called comp pro magnum roller rockers, almost 300 dollars but well worth it, they come with a 1.52 ratio which will be a little more lift for you but you will still be ok with those springs. Good luck.

ok thanks 71 nova... cool car (71 nova) I always liked those. there is a nice one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2455230015

If the rockers will be ok I am going to wait to buy the new rockers because I am trying to save to buy better heads

I read somewhere about checking the rockers with a paper clip (small or large not sure??) in the slot while turning the motor over by hand to see if it pinches the clip. Is the an accurate test?

Also read about double nutting the rockers if using used nuts, so I bought some thin 3/8 fine thread nuts, is this a good idea?
