I know of several people who run 400s. An I have a very good set up for the street that makes over 425HP and almost 500 ft lbs of torque. If thats something you would be interested in PM me. Or email me @ robert.ogg@comcast.net

    Cool

Many yearns ago, I had 2 '79s with 400s; one, a Suburban, one a pickup, both 4x4, both 3/4 ton, with suspension upgrades and 33s, or later, 35s on the Sub. The Sub's engine was rebuilt, .030 over bore, and -.010 on the crank, stock heads mildly massaged and port matched with a Weiand SP2P, Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers, a Crane "low RPM torque" RV cam, HEI with MSD or Accel upgrades. Also had a 4x4 dually with a 454. The Sub was the best runner of the bunch; never had any problem getting into SoCal freeway traffic, even with a 10K trailer; it pulled better than the 454. With both the 400s, running empty, or with a light load, maybe up to 1K lbs, mileage was about 10 - 12 around town, but out on the open stretches across the desert batween "LA" and "Vegas", Phoenix, Tucson, and other points east, the mileage went up to the high teens on "cruise control" at 70, and a couple of times, the Sub poked the hell out of 21, running with just my overnight acoutrements and a couple of ten drawer "top boxes". On the obverse, the dually with the 454 always got 8 to 12, loaded or not, fast or slow; it also pulled grades with a trailer a "little" better than the 400s, but not much. I ran the crap out of those trucks, and with good regular maintenance, they all served me better than I could ever have imagined; all were over 200K when I sold out, and they were still running well. Mind you, they were definitely working trucks; not off road racers, but extremely capable off road, or on; never got stuck with the "fat tired" ones, but did get the dually bogged in the sand once in a while.

I'd never look askance at a 400; it's a good engine if it's built correctly.

Go with the 400 SB+30 over 406 Build . Make sure you have a Good Cooling System . For your Exhaust System . Run 2 1/2" Straight Pipe with Turbo Mufflers and Turn Downs at the Diff .

I would Try to rebuild That 400 SB Chevy . I personally do not Like 383 Builds . Why Not Run a 350+30 over 355-375 HP 4-Bolt Main Build ? As for Your Truck Needing Cats ? I would say it would Need a Bit more then That for 1984 EPA Standards . Now its an Off Road Truck . It may Not need the EPA Testing in Your State any Longer. You will need to Find Out .
