My son has a 357 SBC in an S-10 with 4.56 gears and a 700 R 4. Victor Heads flow 300 cfm intake and the current cam is too aggressive for street use. It is a Solid roller 255 @ .050 and about 600 lift if memory serves me right. 770 carb and victor intake.

What cam would be about right for street use as a daily driver?

Depends on the static compression ratio. In order to have a player, the intake closing point of the cam must be matched to the scr.

Define too agressive.............
idle....
drivability..
gas mileage...
frequent valve adjustments ...etc.

Mostly driveability. He would like torgue to come in earlier, right now it happens at 4500rpm and above.

He has 66 cc heads , flat tops with two valve releifs, and pistons are .006 above the deck and .041 gasket thickness. I think it works out to 10.5 :1 compression. Does that help?

I have run a comp can extreme 268 in two cars now sound real good and it works!

Are you certain the cam is the problem???? That's a lot of carb, and the Victor intake works best from 3500 rpm and up to the 7500 range.... If he's running that many Revs on the street I suppose it's fine.....

Yup on what Tech said.... I've been playing with the Comp Cams "Cam Quest" software they have made available.... I've discovered when you add in all the details of the engine and not just the generic "street and strip use" term, the program seems to make some accurate recomendations....or chicken out like me and talk it over with the techs at Comp!!!!!

I always run their reccomendations past Richard......him, Pat, and Erik are the cam guru's around the 'hood!!!!!!!

I put the Comp XE268 cam in my Nova 355. Im very happy with it. Pulls hard up to 5800 rpms. And torque out the ass. Tire smoking fun , working on getting power to ground.

He is running up to 7500 when he shifts but it is not good for the street. We need it all to be over by 6000 and come in by 2500.

My suggestion would be to punch these parameters into the Cam Quest software (the download is a freebie) and see what you come up with.... If he can run it up to 7500 and shift on the street, sounds like he picks out some of the same type of roads that I prefer...... I mean, not that I would ever condone such activity on the streets!!!!!!

Thanks dave. I downloaded that program and the tutorial, I like it. It would seem that the cam we threw in there years ago is too aggressive, little wonder we only ran 12's.

XE268 would be your best best!
