Crate Engine, USEFUL INFORMATION
Missing timing Mark?
A couple of years ago I purchased a 350 HO Deluxe Engine (12496968) from a local GM dealer. Once installed in my rod I could not get the timing mark on the balancer to line up with the T/W pointer. I was able to set the timing by feel and the engine ran fine. As expected the place where I bought the engine was of no help.
I was talking a another rodder at a local show who had the same issue. It seems that the HO Deluxe was fitted with a 8" balancer and you need to re-scribe the timing mark 1-5/8" below the existing mark. Once I did this the mark appeared and I was able to verify my previous timing by feel. To my surprise it was within
spec.

Makes me wonder if GM expected you to install a smaller diameter harmonic balancer. Or that they used whatever was in the parts bin.
Good information for the Chebbie guys.Dave W
I am now gone from this forum for now - finally have pulled the plug

Thanks guys! It's been a long road. Fun doing finishing work for sure. Getting the dash ready for paint and some interior trim. Have to do some finish work on the aluminum headliner before...
