hehhehee, it feels good to get at least one guy! Sorry drg, hehe, NOT.

Actually our gallons are 4.54 litres in comparrison to 3.78 litres in a U.S. gallon or five of our gallons make six of yours.

So when I am travelling in the US and I want to check my mileage, I divide the number of gallons by six and multiply by five to see how many mpg I am getting in Cdn measure. Obviously for you guys coming up here, you would do the reverse.
Objects in my rear view mirror are a good thing unless,.... they have red and blue lights flashing.

Typhoon...Too much math there for me.

    Updated Info:

Our mechanic gave him the price for rebuilding the engine and trans. Now, why my dad didn't ask about crate motors I'm not sure he must have forgot. Our mechanic would ship the engine and trans to Jasper engines. The cost for the engine being rebuilt and I think installed would be $3,000 and the price for the Tranny would be $1,500. This seems like a lot to me. Couldn't we get a 350 for around $3,000 and a turbo trans or 700R4 automatic tranny for less then or around $1,500? With a crate motor what other accessories would we need? Like a distrubuter, starter etc. For example take a look at this link

    http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...id=128&pid=103

    This is the info:
    1996-00 3/4 - 1 Ton Pick-Ups 5.7L / 350 GM Goodwrench Crate Engine
    Price: $2,303.95

This engine would work without much modification right? And what accessories would I need?

    Also there is this one:

    http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...id=120&pid=115

330HP / 350 GM Performance Parts Crate Engine Assembly
    Price: $2,299.90

What else would I need for this motor?

I realize that this price doesn't include installation but its still a newer motor with quite possibly more HP. Anyone know what HP my stock motor comes with?

    Thanks,
    Greg

Can't tell you about the casting numbers as the car isn't here. If you had to guess how much would all the accessories be? They do have a motor that comes with some accessories let me list it here. Its $3,500 and this is what it says:

The 330hp 350 crate engine from GM Performance Parts is loaded with additional components to provide a complete engine package and eliminate any quess work. The 330hp 350 includes an aluminum dual plane intake, Holley carburetor, HEI distributor, water pump, harmonic balancer, and a flexplate for automatic transmissions.

Could you give me a guestimate on how much the parts would be that I would need for that engine to? I'm really working you guys with this huh? Well if I get annoying just ignore my posts =)

If you want the highest gas miileage you can get, along w/good performance & driveability, you pretty much have to go w/fuel injection. Look at the GM crate motors that are already set up w/FI or buy used. I would not pick a 305 but a 350 with FI & a overdrive trans.

If you want to buy used look at camaros, trans ams or vette.
    good luck w/your project

I'm looking for a FI engine right now. Maybe I can go to a junk yard and get a 5.7L out of a totaled silverado or something.

Why not just find a good reputable hot rodder in your area and rebuild what you got??? Geez. Take the money you save and tell Dad to buy a 10 year old Ford Escort, they get good mileage.

It would be easy to drop in a 326 / 350 / 389 / 400 / 421 /455 poncho (choose one), any of them would be a straight bolt-in in place of the 287. Or you could be crafty and use an OHC six out of a tempest or firebird.
