    Cam choice for sbc

Looking for advice on cam choice.

Currently, running vortec heads with Comp Cam oval springs and roller tip rockers, a Comp Cam XE262 cam, headers, edlebrock aluminum dual-plane intake with JET stage II Q-jet carb, Petronics billet HEI distributor, and Keith Black hypernuematic 10:1 pistons, and balanced to 6500 rpm.
    I run a manual 5-speed transmission with a 3.43 posi rearend.
This is a daily driver and a lot of fun.
I want more horsepower and not concerned with gas mileage or idle quality.

Should I run a single pattern cam or dual pattern cam?

Looking around the 280 duration and 480 lift.

    Thanks for the advice!!!

    I understand!
You like the single pattern profile cam.
What is the advantage on the street and what might I be giving up?

These are stock re-man vortec heads with beehive springs.
I'm currently running the Comp Cam XE262 cam but want more than this mild cam. Got the headers/exhaust with 5 speed manual tranny and 3.43 posi out back - but want more! Don't usually go over 5500 rpm. Gas mileage and idle quality doesn't matter.
Dual pattern or single pattern AND what are the advantages/dis-advantages?

There is not a stock sbc head out there that I would run a single pattern cam with.
I would always try and favor the exhaust by 6 to 8 degree's.

You could run more cam but I think I would run more gear first and then look at the larger cams.
Make sure you have your valve springs checked.

284 Duration with 480 lift it a very popular grind for mild street. It has very nice sound... I sold lot of that cam back in the 80'S and 90'S. That Grind was by General Kentic now I don't know who bought out the GK Cam.

    Thanks for that advice Racecar!
Now I am tossed between two cams:
    272/282 442/465 OR
    282/292 465/480 ??
Crower Cams call a 284 duration cam an Ultra High Performance strip cam and you use terms like mild street. I consider the Comp Cams 262XE cam a mild street cam.
So you think I'll be OK on the street with a manual tranny with a 284 cam???

I would go with this cam if you put 1.6 rocker on Intake side.

Thanks racecar for all the advice. I will advance the cam 4 degrees but will keep the rockers all the same. I plan to do this the weekend after thanksgiving and will post my results shortly after that.

I would be very careful when you advance the cam.
Some of the Comp cams already have 4* of advance built in to them.
I will guess he wants to advance it to move the power-band down a little or compensate for timing chain stretch.
