    Geared Starter

    Hi,

I just pulled the starter off my Chevy because it was refusing to turnover - randomly. (Always at the worst times.)

It's a newer geared version. As I proceeded to pull the solenoid it rapidly became clear this is a whole different animal to the standard direct drive version. On the DD versions you remove the bonding screw to the motor's terminal, then the two screws from the solenoid housing. Next you can turn the solenoid 90 degrees and it comes right off in your hand leaving the plunger still attached to the starter assembly. Not on this bugger! The motor is hooked to the solenoid with a short cable. The two housing bolts are removed and the solenoid starts to come off but won't come free!!!

Notably: There is no bottom tang.
    All the screws are O-ringed.
There is a complex rubber boot inside the lever housing.
I've rotated that solenoid housing about a million degrees. Tried every angle. I can not get that solenoid off.

    Anyone got any ideas?

I don't think I can help, but do you have a picture of it?

    Hi BRT,
    Here's an example.
    Looks just like mine.
If you need some specific shot, that could be arranged.

Gall dang!! I think I now see why I can't get it apart!! While looking for a picture for you, on that page under "Technology", I see this!

Must be a way to take it apart... Someone put it together!

Well I just put in a new starter and...... it made no difference!!

So I clamped a jumper cable to the battery plus and thru the other end under the vehicle. Using needle nose pliers I was just able to clamp an alligator jumper lead onto the the "start" terminal. I touched the other end to the jumper cable and the starter took off. After replacing my ignition switch and the wire from the firewall side, to the dash side, I now see the whole problem was in the start wire between about the middle of the rear of the engine down the conduit to the starter. Somewhere in there the wire has failed.

Now I have to pull the starter to replace the wire... Argh!!!
