Vortec heads are a good head to get you in the 400 horse range, they are inexpensive and claim 30-40 horse over older heads.

What's your budget and how reliable does this thing need to be? How's it driven? Daily? Track car? If track what kind, drag, circle, autox? What vehicle is it going in? How much does it weigh? What kind of rear gears you runnin'?

All thes questions need to be answered before someone can give you the best possible answer to your question.

Streets has got the cheapest answer. Study a bit, listen to all the Chevy guru's around here, then shop the swap meets and want ads for good used parts. 400 hp on a budget is possible, long as your budget is realistic and or flexible enough to absorb it.

Or, sell the 350, and buy another motor with a larger bore. It is easier to get more HP out of more cubic inches. I am not saying that a 350 cant push 400 horse, Im saying a big block may be more cost effective to get te 400HP. After all, you trying to surpass 1HP per CI. One you reach 1 per it becomes harder to gain the extra horse.

I always thought big blocks were way more expensive then small blocks to build????????I would keep the small block, i think you would be better off.

It pretty much depends on the extent of the buildup. In generalities, if you compare it to the 350 Chevy, I can cost any where between a few bucks to a couple hundred to a few hundred more in parts to thru (depending on wether your overhauling, rebuilding or doing a preformance build). This can be said for almost ANY american V8 compared to a SBC!!!

At least where I am, the killer is the INITIAL cost of any BBC, and the more desirable the bigger the bucks they want for it. Then of course there's always the required upgrades to the suspension and cooling, and if you don't get the accessory brackets there's that expense too.
I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

400 hp on a 454 can be as simple as taking a stock motor, changing the manifold and cam, then milling the heads and decking the block to raise the compression.

"Budget" is the key word here, 400 hp is simple, 9.5 - 10.0 cr, trick flow twisted wedge heads, 280 cam, single plane, 750 cfm, headers, 400 + hp & torque, the heads are $1000.00 but if I remember right worth 78 hp over stock 882 heads, run all day on pump gas

ok this should help....what is your budget on this motor? what are you willing to spend?? heads are a great place to get power BUT it depends on what your willing to spend. There are other ways of making the power without new heads, what budget are we "building" this motor on????
