    cam advance

     



    I can't find the post, but recently someone wanted to know why the cam grinders grind in some advance when they manufacture a cam. I just tripped over the answer while surfing the Isky site:

    "most of our camshafts are ground from one to two cam degrees advanced to allow for eventual stretch in the timing chain."

    Is this the thread?
    So, if I wanted to install a cam "straight up" and was using a gear drive I should retard the cam 1 or 2 degrees?

    Yes, but make sure that the cam has the advance built into it. Comp does 4 degrees advance on I believe all of their cams. Some of isky don't have it at all. Mine doesn't. But check the cam card for the amount of advance and retard it if you have a gear drive.

    Subtract intake lobe centerline from lobe separation angle to determine the amount of ground-in advance.
