    vortec heads

What year did chevy start with the production vortec heads on the 350's and is any particular year "better". 2nd question is why do they need a "special" intake, is it the bolt pattern?
    "oohh...thats gonna leave a mark!"

I can only answer the 2nd part of your question. PreVortec intakes were 12 bolts, 6 per side. Vortecs are 8, 4 per side. I have a '99 Vortec engine I am going to use in my T, and I THINK Vortecs started in '96, but someone else will know for sure.

The bolt pattern is 4-bolts a side and the bolts enter the block exactly vertically instead of at an angle. In other words, straight up and down. And yes, the Vortec v-8 heads started in 1996 on the 350.
