    327 SBC oil problem

I`m currently rebuilding a 327 SBC and there is something wrong with the oil flow at the filter adaptor the center oring does not contact the engine block. Is this normal? What forces the oil into the filter if the two sides have no seperation. It seem that the oil would take the shortest route and go into the system with out being filterd?Any and all help welcome thanks for your reply. Tracy

Being a 327, I have to ask....What type of filter are you using...The canister (pre 68) or the screw on (68-69)??

To put a screw on type on a pre 68, you need a special adapter.

I`m currently have an AC Delco adaptor for the spin on filter. The center oring does not contact the block.

Do you mean a spin on adapter from a later model engine....or a special adapter to convert the canister type to the spin on type?

The later model adapter from a factory block wont work....There is nowhere for the seal of the spin on filter to seal on the block. You need to use an aftermarket adapter.

Just trying to get straight what you are using.

Also, if I remember correctly, some of the aftermarket ones were junk too............Maybe, another one of us old guys will remember.........I am having one of those "Old timer" moments about this.........

There are two seals, one on the outer diam. and one that looks like it should contact the oil hole in the center but when installed it is about 1/2 inch from the center oil hole. I`ve also tried to install a Mr. gasket adapter as well and it is the same as the AC Delco adapter. Will this adapter be acceptiable to use? or am I going to need the canistor type filter. Just a note the engine was makeing noise and the main and rod bearings all indicated oil starvation.

I see what you are saying....Its been years since I put one of these on, but I think there is a part missing from that adapter. Looks like it needs a rubber sleeve that fits in that centre groove.
Remember what I said before...there were good and bad adapters made.
