Hurst Shifter Problems!

When I was driving my 56 chevy belair this weekend on the way home from the cruise down telegraph and northline it now grinds slighty when i shift from 3rd to 4th. I have not been abusing it and the hurst shifter and the muncie trans only has about 4,000 miles on it. I jacked it up and adusted the yelllow( 3rd and 4th gear) bracket arm and also the bolt that controls the shift distance when i adjusted the bolt in I lost 1st and all other gears so Ive been gadjusting it out, I have all my gears back except it still grinds when I shift from 3rd to 4th. It also looks like im 2 to 3 threads past its orginal position but when its there it grinds horriblably. ANY FEEDBACK WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! THANKS

Did you pin out the shifter to adjust it?

I dont mean to sound dumb but what does pin out the shifter to adjust it mean? I just inherited the car from my grandfather.

There is a hole through all the arms and the housing just below the shifter handle under the car, about 3/16" or so. To adjust the shifter put the trans in neutral and loosen the adjusters at the shifter. Slide the pin in, use the biggest drill bit, solid rod, or screwdriver that will fit in the center hole. Adjust the arms so they are all in neutral when "pinned". Put the shifter in each gear, one at a time, and adjust the overshift stop bolts so that you do not break the shifter forks in the trans by overshifting.

if you adj. it like dave said, and it still grinds from 3 to 4 it sounds like you're not clutching it out all the way or the 4th gear synchronizer is shot. :CRY:

Yeah when I shift from third to fourth the clutch is pushed all the way to the floor

Thanks for all the help as soon as its a little bit cooler I will try everything, its been 100 degrees for the past week
