yup there is no replacement for displacement, but there are certain times smaller displacements are ok..... short stroke motors for instance... short stroke motors wind up faster and can attain higher rpms with less work done to the bottom end.... such as the corvette 283s.... you can build a 305 to have plenty of power for your little truck though.... its gonna cost some money... and you dont want to go too crazy if you want to keep gas affordable(not that it is affordable right now)
just because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day

Well the upside of a 305 is .....budget!Most like on this forum basically give away a 305 no matter what the condition.Take my 75 dollar motor as an example.less than 3000 miles bored .030 over ,mains .010 under, balanced, new pistons and rods, rams horns, etc, etc.Lots of work and little money ,I now have a 300 hp + motor.I put lots of "bling" on it but its not needed for power output The 305 is not for everyone ,but as a first motor or a budget type deal or u already have the motor then its just fine!!Lets put this into perspective. Most mustang 5.0 cars do not have over 300 hp,so unless u put the 305 into a land barge ,u will eat up all the stock 5.0 cars and alot of the mismatched part cars. That means a 94 z-28 camaro with 275 hp will soon appear to get smaller and smaller behind you.Now this might look like briggs and stratton hp numbers to most. But upgrading from a 4cyl s-10 or a ford escort or even the mighty honda civic to the 305 is like jumpin into a muscle car.The 305 is about 145-180 hp in stock form and about the same numbers in torque ,thats what has gotten it a bad rap .Would I build a 305 for the 1/4 mile ....no,is a 305 a good first motor or a money saver.....yes,is it for everyone .....no,Look how hot the 302 ford 5.0motor is!!!When it fits the need, the 305 will work!!The bonus to this is , when u blow it up or wear it out and decide u need more than the 305 will deliver , the main parts u have not broke will fit right onto the 350 or 383 !!!!The first thing people say is then why not start out with a 350 or 383 then? Money is the issue for most.Cheap 305 almost complete ,leaves money for carb ,intake, and other small things headers and such. Now u have a base of parts,so when u blow the motor or upgrade u already have a carb and intake ,some headers, maybe some rolller rockers or even possibly a cam since the 305 likes to be over cammed,u can buy one that will work in a larger engine. Now the 350 or 383 is able to be bought on a budget, because now all u need for a hot 350 is block ,rotating assembly and heads. The 305 can be like a steping stone for those on a budget or all they may ever want!!!I have seen lots of people build more hp than they can use or want to use and get rid of the rod ,because of it being too much or a step up from a 4cyl honda 125 hp to a 598 bbf with a big pucker factor.
Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)
