You do need self-aligning rockers. The old heads had pushrod guide holes, the new ones just have holes. So, for the new heads, the rocker arm was made with a groove that maintained its position on the top of the valve stem. Self-aligning roller tip rockers will have two washers on the ends of the roller that keep it from sliding off the valve stem.
