    Cool In need of knowledge

I have an 87 IROC that I would like to upgrade from a 350 to a 383 stroker. The question is, can I do so and still keep the TPI system? If so, how do I do it? I have basic knowledge of car restoration and rebuilds, but this is my first attempt on completely restoring a vehicle, so any advice would be kick ass! The engine is all original with 170,000 miles on it (I felt this is pretty decent considering it's a 19 yr old car). So I guess my next question is, should I salvage what I can from this engine, or start with all new parts? Let me know, Thanks!!

I'm not sure if this is right but I just helped a buddy of mine build a 383 out of his 5.7L LT1 in a little later model camaro than yours. All we did was pull the electronics/intake/injectors out of the way and pull the heads and short block out. Then we rebuild it with an all new spinning assembly because he wanted to put some aftermarket, tougher parts in it. Then we had the heads rebuilt. Then we stuffed it back into the car. We didn't change anything on the computer/injector side of it other than to give more fuel to the motor.

With 170k on it you'll most probably not even be able to get the pistons out without brute force. When rebuilding an engine that age it's not a pull apart-put together thing. You'll have to have your engine checked for bore wear, flatness and maybe for more than normal rust in the coolant passages, depending on what antifreeze you used. if it's still standard bore chances are good you can open up to +.030 and get a round bore. An engine that old may not clean up at +.030 and you may have to go +.040 or even +.060, and then i would certainly sonic check cylinder wall thickness.
In any case there's going to be a nice lot of clearancing and boring and honing waiting for you on that block...
But to answer your question, yes, you can keep the TBI, but maybe you'll want to adjust fuel settings. A stroker doesn't use all that much more fuel or air, so you should be OK with your old TBI.
    Hope I could help,
    Max

G.M. is selling very affordable crate engine's , check them out before stroking out your 350 sometimes it's more expensive for machine work.Jegs' Summit
