Engine Builds

I was wondering if any of you guys/girls had some good SBC builds that can compete with my friends BBC. I am looking for 550+ natually aspirated at the flywheel. I don't have alot of money but am looking to beat my friend, I have another thread asking about tuning my current engine but it won't have anough power next season, or even the end of this one when he smokes me bad cause he gets it tuned right. I was looking at building a 383 but don't know alot about making HP (which I want) for not alot of money (which I don't have).

500 hp is somewhat attainable on a budget with a 383, but 550 is really pushing it. You are already going to need some pricey heads and a stout bottom end to make the 500. You will really need to wind the motor out to 7000 rpm or so to get the 550 out of it.

power = money, if you dont have a lot of it right now... i'd either find a way of aquiring some.... or dont worry about winning races.... sadly thats what it really comes down to...

I found a build that has 600 hp and costs $3500, he said he drove it on the street for several thousand miles and raced it all the time and never had a problem with it, he sent pics and was running low 11s and had a high 10 run in a 3500lb car. He never had his engine above 6500 RPMs. True the heads are going to cost a pretty penny, the ones he used are about $1500. I won't be on a budget forever, so any builds you have I would glady take. I would also like to stay small block so I can humiliate him with all his big blocks. He could have been saying all that just to look cool or like he had something better than he did, so I don't know if he actually did that. I am saving now so any and all builds are welcome (but try to keep it under $10,000)

oh.... you have way more budget than i figured you ment.... that kind of budget is not a problem to make a good build... i figured you were the usual kid tryin to get 500 HP with a $900 budget.... buy an eagle 383 kit go for one with forged pistons not hyperruetic or however its spelled.... probably use some AFR heads, cam grinds and intake manifolds i'll leave to other people that know their chevy's better...

600 h.p, and cost $3,500 ? drove it on the street for several thousand of miles?Never had it above 6,500 r.p.m.'s? I think some one might be pulling your leg just a little bit.To try and humiliate him with a small block you will have to spend a lot more than $3,500.I don't think you could even buy all the parts for $3,500 for a 600 h.p. sbc. not even including the machine work.You will have $3,500 in the heads and the rotating assembly.

maybe he was using a 300 shot of nitrous :LOL:

sorry for not specifying my budget, I can afford anything for about $4000 (in a few months of saving)

i priced the parts he gave me and they came out to be around $3500....I didn't believe him so I checked. I don't know it if makes that much power but it will make more power than I have now (I can always throw nitrous on it to go faster)

Here's a decent combo for a high hp 383 that is streetable to an extent if you don't mind a little noise and give up some vacuum:

Eagle rotating ass.--$1000.00 Hyper/cast $2000.00 Forged
200cc Aluminum Heads---$800.00+ www.CGMMotorsports.com
CompCams solid roller cam--12-902-9 and lifters---$600.00
Professional Products Hurricane single plane intake--$130.00

That will give you a start on 500+ HP

Spend some money on gearing to make up for what you lack in HP.

Real easy if you use an LS1 or LS2 as a starting point...:cool:

yea i bought that book that Denny recommended. It really has some neat stuff in it. Lots of good ideas. Good investment. I also bought another book that is on that site called "How to Build a Chevy Small Block for the Street."

Next i want to buy a small block blue printing book. Then maybe i can get started mapping out my own powerplant.

For around that much I would look at some crate 600 sbc with a warrenty.

A turn key 540 BBC sells for around $10,000 in a street version.

I see long bbc for a lot less, maybe not complete with carb, starter and pully assembly.

Seriously, for anyone that is at a beginner to amateur level of small block experience, the book that Denny recommended is an ace in the hole...I just got it today and I've alreaday read about the first 30 pages...It's PACKED FULL of useful information.

I agree, I think if you look hard enough and turn some of the wrenchs you can get more for less. I am not a pro, but have learn alot by doing some of the work my self and asking questions here and anywhere to get the help, and researching.

i went and picked up that book, i think i can do those engines. your in input and advice has been very helpful, thank you

Hey erik erikson, I was just trying to commuicate to the question ask and to you. We can easily spend 10k and more on a engine I was trying to make a point that for some people a warrenty is not a bad way to go, and you can do it for less than 10k. and Denny W, book show that. All done with good intentions.

JMO, but I doubt 550hp and budget even belong in the same sentence........ Whatever the motor costs, you'll need at least that much more spent on driveline and suspension to make it all work..... I would imagine the majority of 600hp bench racing motors probably dyno at about 400hp,,,,,.......

I had a 13 sec. Ford. Maverick with the Grabber hood.It was a great car the only problem was the rust.You could throw a cat threw the trunk.:LOL:

It's always been a well kept secret amongst us Might Mav affecianodo's, Erik. Even ran one of my Mavericks on the 1/8 mile with 6.00 gear and a 5 speed!!!! (I was a lot younger and a lot faster then) :whacked: :whacked:

A good friend of mine had a bright yellow Pinto with a 351 Windsor in it.I am not really sure how fast it was but it really was great fun running away from the new Camaros and Mustangs.

Yup, if I should trip over a Pinto 2 door wagon someday, I sure would like to build just one more skinny block powered Pinto. The wagons are nice cuz you can take the side windows out, replace them with tin. Does a good job of hiding the tubs and roll bar!!!!!!!!

If you really have to have a SBC giant killer than try saving a little more green stuff and then head on over to Jon Barret Hot Rod Engines and get yourself one of these little buggers.
