    More Power

Hey, I need tuning help. I need more power out of my engine so I can beat my friend. We have been drag racing each other for a while and I haven't lost (yet). He just built a new big block , without telling me, and I just found out and we are racing in a month and I don't have the money to build a new engine.

I have a 350 with Vortec heads, Comp Cams 268 XE with 477/480 lift, Heddman Headers (not sure the size) Edlebrock RPM-Air Gap intake with holly 750, a completely stock bottom end with dished pistons, 4.11 gears, TH-350 with a 3200 stall, MT ET-Streets 28x11.5. All this is in/on a '77 camaro which I race with no mufflers interior, we also took of the front bumper and sway-bar and other various parts to lighten it.

Is there anything i can do to get more power, some tricks that I might not have heard of.

In case you are wondering, he has a 467 with new heads, cam, intake, and im sure other stuff i don't know.

Tell your friend that you found out that if you add 20% nitro in your racing fuel that it gives you an extra 50 horses......lol

Big block in a bottle (N2O) is about your only chance without changing your whole engine. There are some lift rule circle track cams that you could run with those vortecs if you had true flattops. I figure with your setup you have right under 9.0:1 compression. If you were to run .015" head gaskets, your compression would go to 9.5:1

    In summary:

    1. N2O

    2. Pull the heads and get the squish to .037min.--.040max, change the springs in the head to handle higher lift. Comp makes a spring that doesn't need modifications to work, and go with a maximum cam of 280 adv. duration installed at 106* CL

    3. Stroke it and go with FT pistons. (Eagle cast crank-189.00, Speed Pro Hypers-229.00, Your rods and a 400 dampner and flexplate.

You are going to have to spend money to run with the big block. Maybe someone else can come up with some secrets I don't know.

I think my brother and I will just put a 150 shot on it this year. the big block is mostly stock 454. and he is going to run street tires, and we have slicks. Next year we are going to build a 383. With AFR 210 heads solid roller cam. That should keep us from loosing.

He is still running street tires, so I think, well, I know i can take him off the line and his car is heavier than mine. I was wondering if playing with the cam timing would do anything for me, I heard that you can pick up some HP that way. I think I might go buy N2O but don't want to give him a reason why he lost, something like "You had to use nitrous to beat me" since he always blames something for his loss. Last time it was my tires and gears(which were BF Goodrich radial t/a and open 4.10 gears) so i want to beat him naturally aspirated but don't think that will happen, i can always throw back in his face he had to get a BB to beat me
