I have a serious question here, is it possible to make a 283 into a formidable street motor?

I ask because I found a nice little 72 Chevy Long wheelbase with a 283.

What I want to know is, with a new cam, heads, intake, carb and exhaust, it is possible to make a stout 283?

I mean Mustangs ran hog wild with a 289, but then again that was a really light car.
