    Exhaust Installation

     



    I'm getting ready to install a new exhaust system for my '62 C10. I need help as to where to put the mufflers in front of the X ? and what size of pipe and muffler, theres currently Flowmasters. I have a 383 and I'm looking for a nice rumbling sound. Any help would be appreciated.

    I had a 63 big window short bed with mild 327 and Vette 4- speed.
    Fun truck, hauled many a dirt bike with it.

    I installed the mufflers to the rear of the crossmember.

    You really don't want them under the floorboards, they can put a lot of heat into the cab.
    (A friend of mine stuck his Ford mufflers under the cab and ended up having to brace his feet off the floor when towing a ski boat back from The River during a desert heat wave. It was a miserable trip until he hit the coast.)

    Mufflers tend to have a bit of a rap when mounted to the front and a much mellower sound when mounted toward the rear.

    My pickup ran side outlets in front of the rear wheels and it worked fine.
    Sound was nice and all that, but little brothers pickup with similar setup had tailpipes and sounded better.

    Running two chamber FlowMasters, the rumble will be pretty strong without an H-Pipe.
    Give em a try without and if there's too much rumble adding an H-Pipe will attenuate the low frequency sound and take much of the rumble out of it.
    The H-Pipe will take a lot of the highway cruising drone out of it as well.
    Drone gets old fast.

    If you're still in the market for mufflers, give the three chamber FlowMasters a look.
    I run a pair of these on a true dual system on a 2002 F150 SuperCrew.
    Sounds nice, very old timey, there's no drone and best part was mileage went up 1 mpg in both city and highway.
    (People will tell you mileage will go up 3-4 mpg with the installation of a one in, two out muffler, but the ones I know who tell me that don't really keep good track of mileage and that's what they think they're getting with their imitation duals.)

    Excellent advice from C9X. I had the same issue with mufflers and ran them farther back for less heat under the floorboards and less noise.

    What about the size of pipe? How much of a difference will it make in power and sound?
