    Crankshaft replacement--Help!

     



    My SBC will eventually go into a '53 Chevy pickup if I can stop making stupid mistakes such as the following: I bought an unknown crank from a "friend" and had it turned. The shop that turned the crank didn't clean the oil holes in the journals so I cleaned them out and apparently either dragged up some dirt or made a burr on one of the holes. One of the rod bearings turned up with a nasty gash. I don't trust the crank so I bought a new Scat crank.

    After removing the defective crank, I put tubing on the rod bolts and today attempted to install the new crank. I can't seem to do anything right these days and nothing went according to plan. Since I have never replaced a crank in an assembled engine, I am lost as to how to do it. The engine is on an engine stand, upside down with heads and intake manifold installed. I don't relish disassembling the whole engine but I can do if if that is the only way to install the crank. Help!

    Any helpful replies will be most appreciated.

    Pull all of the spark plugs, push all of the pistons down (up) in the bores until the rod bolts don't get in the way too much, make sure to put tubing or hose or tape on the rod bolts, get a helper, and lay the crank in carefully - the helper can move the rods to clear the throws where needed. Then carefully pull each rod up to the throw, and put the caps on, check clearances, etc.. That's what I have done in the past. It's sort of a pain; much easier if the pistons are out.

    Talking Crank(y) update

     



    Thanks to Rrumbler, I was able to get the crank installed despite my worst efforts. Now to get it to TDC and get the cam gear installed and I can go joust with other windmills.

    Changing the crank may have been an exercise in stupidity because the old crank was easily deburred and a new set of bearings would have been all that was necessary. I will try to sell the old crank and recoup some of my dough.
