i got a guy whos gonna ask around and try to get me a used 4.3 for my truck. he wants the ID numbers for the motor so where do i find them? and are they really necessary to find a 4.3? cant i just tell him i need a 262 4.3 V6?

Not for a 'project' car/engine. Most salvage yards want the infomation from the engine you are 'replacing', assuming that you are replacing a bad engine. There are 3 different versions of 4.3L.
1) Early carburated
2) Early injected
3) Lated injected (Vortec)
If you want to use a carb, get an early non-Vortec engine. I think it's pre '92 ('85-'91?). What yard are you working with?
