just a suggestion, tymebomb. use the 195 t-stat, the hotter you can run a 305 engine without overheating it the better it will run.
Also don't ditch the q jet it is a great carb if you understand it.
As for the ping, try a vacuum delay in the hose to the egr valve. ford used to use them on the distributor advances back in the 60's. they work like a check valve so don't put it in backwards. good luck.

In case I didn't mention.. the pinging isnt really noticable untill after it gets past 160. I was thinking of going to a 160 or 180 stat just because I only drive it in the summer months where the temp outdoors is around 90-105. so at operating temp 20 Psi is ok? the car has 106,000 Miles. when I pulled the intake it was carbon city. and I have bad valve guide seals on the left head.
i was thinking of ditching the qjet for a edelbrock carb. funny.. with all the little problems and stuff I can still get 16 MPG in the city. What is a good safe grade oil to use in a car like mine?

tymebomb, that was not a debate. that was a lot of yrs of experience giving you a lot of facts, and a few people giving you their opinion. You chose to go with the opinion instead of the facts. you should have smoke coming out your ears by now.

I havn't chosen anything yet actually.. seeing as how the car is going to storage in 2 weeks I will try some of the least expensive repairs and make some adjustments here and there taking everyones advice into consideration.. i didn't say for sure I was going to use a 160.. i was thinking of it. I will probrably leave the 192 in or put in the 180. I can see the difference between an opinion and fact, as I can usually only give my "opinion" myself most of the time because although I have been working on cars for 9 years I still have alot to learn.. hence, me being here!

I read mention of it running to lean.. So if I hooked back up the EGR and adjusted the fuel mixture in the primaries would that make a difference? And S10.. Where could I find out if my car has this lock up?

i put a 160 with a HP chip in my s10 to see if it would richen it up some and i had no heat. i want trying to give you a hard time its just one of my hang ups on here, when sometimes the right answers dont mean anything. its more the way the person speakes than the info. and thats not the way it should be. we talked to you for 4 pages and it ended up like it started. me and denny didnt do a very good job, we let dr bow tie out talk us, and he is way out of the box. you need to get that carbon off the top of the pistons using water if you like, but dont put to much at one time. look under the car at or close to the trans shift leaver and if there is a elec. plug there unplug it. on most of the first smog cars late timing pinged worse than adv. timing so you need to put the timing back like it was, put what ever thermostat that came in it, and see that you have. short trips and cold thermostats dont work in the long run.
