    Best Heads

Im trying to figure out which heads are best for my street stock,
Im running a 358 ci. small block,350 bored 40 over with keith black pistons, I have a cam that has .488 lift. I m trying to decide which heads are best ,it will be run with a 2 barrel carb and stock intake. The casting numbers I can run are 487/882/997/624/126/493/185/339/441/or 993. I have heard so many controversies between the 993, 441 and 882 being the best 76cc chambered head. Can anybody help.

Since the 461 is not in the list, what would be your next recommendation? I am leaning towards the 462 (also not on the list) because the site I read stated the 882's and 441's did not flow quite as well.

I have a set of 339X heads. They have factory oversized runners of 170cc, but also have small intake valves, 1.72", for use in 307 engines. You might be able to get away with installing the 1.94" intake valve that is stock in all other heads and then you'll have some excellent flowing heads. They also have 74 cc chambers instead of 76 which may help bump your compression ratio the slightest bit. Installing the 1.94 valves might add that 2 cc's to the head, though.

Are you running these heads in something or do you just have them? I am interested in knowing how they work, I had someone try to sell me a set of 307 heads yesterday on the grounds that they would make more compression and that they flow similar to the standard stock 350 heads. Any thoughts on this?

Well, they ran fine on my stock 350 in my truck. The truck is getting a pair of Vortec heads. I haven't run the truck with standard valve heads so I can't tell you if there was a difference. I was planning on having them rebuilt with standard sized valves and putting them on my boat along with thin head gaskets to tighten up the quench and bump the compression some. I believe they have bigger runners than the 461 heads.

Oh, the head don't have oversized runners if they don't have the X at the end of the casting number.

Hmmm... may explain why my 487X heads did fairly well with my combo. I have a 9.8:1 350 +.040, an Edelbrock Performer EPS manifold with a Comp Cams 268H cam pushing 1.6:1 roller rockers and a Hollley 600 double-pumper.

Any idea what runner size this head has? How much bigger is it than the 487? I found on mortec that they have a 75cc chamber. The more I read about the other intricacies, the more I want to know.

    Thanks.
