high RPM missing
SBC 350 bone stock at idle the motor runs perfect... dwell set at 30deg, timing at 10 degs BTDC check manifold vaccume and the motor holds soild at 20Hg. Carb, cap, rotor, coil, plugs, plug wires, points and condenser are all brand new. At higher rpm for an extended period of time it feels as if it's missing......something in the timing perhaps. I had to reshim the distributor gear as there was quiet a bit of play. could the plug wires being to close to each other or touching something thats hot!!
-
Could be the wires, or it could be points bounce, or possibly the timing chain and gears have a lot of wear and the timing is moving around. When you have the timing light on the car and hold the motor at about 2200 RPM, does the timing mark remain steady or does it bounce around a lot???
-
i'll check about the 2200 rpm and timing light. So if the light is all over the place or intermiten it might be the timing chain?? I recently replaced the timing chain cover and checked the chain and everything looked OK...

Sounds like spark plugs, even new ones can be bad.
-
Not necessarily the chain and gears, at what RPM does the engine develop the problem??? Like R said, even new plugs can be bad. More info as to what RPM it does this at would help. If the distributor has points it is obviously old, what condition is it in???
-
If the distributor shows any wear, best to chuck it for a stock GM HEI unit. Maybe not the best for a performance engine, but a stocker will love it and its trouble-free for years.

thanks for the insight fellas, I changed the plugs out last night and pulled the distributor to double check for anything...nothing. The problem starts when the accelerator is applied quickly and when the accelerator is applied slowly. When applied slowly the problem starts when i get past 2000RPM. I watched with a timing light last night and the light was all over the place. what do you guys think!!

Dave said it, the timing chain must be shot.

just ordered a the timing gear the "noisy" kind. Not going for preformance going for the cool factor. I'm also ditching the points and going electronic! i'll keep you updated!!
