what year is my 400?
i have an 81 malibu with a sb 400. the dipstick is on the drivers side. i was wondering if anyone would know what years they were made. i need a gasket set and the ones on ebay say 1970-1980. thanks400ci sb, holley 600, edelbrock rpm, hooker headers, muncie 4spd, 3:73 posi

Well, to be sure you need the casting numbers... when you get them off the back of the block on the lip where the trans mounts up to the block you can visit this website that will tell you what you need to know about the block......

They were only made from '70-'80 and all had the left hand dipstick.I intend to live forever; so far, so good.
