"My question - is it possible to install a 3.48 stroke (350) crank into a 283 block?"
Short answer, no. Main journal diameter on the 283 crank is 2.300", on the 350 it's 2.450. Counterweights are much larger on the 350 crank and there will not be enough meat in the webs to clearance the block. With any bore smaller than 4", custom pistons would be required (read...high-buck). Rod journals are larger on the 350 crank, but you could skirt this issue by using 350 rods.
Even if these hurdles were not in place, you'd have breathing issues using the small-port 283 heads with much larger displacement.
This question in one form or another comes up often on this forum and I'll give you my standard answer. Yank the 283, wrap it in plastic and store it in the corner of the garage. Locate a good-running used 350 (do a compression test on it before laying down your green) and start with a valid player. Want more power? Bolt in a Scat or modified Chevy 400 crank.
There are others on this forum, like Scooter
, who will disagree with me, but that's the way I see it from a common-sense point of view.
